There's also a club for the 28-80-ish AF zooms: The "Cheap AF 28ish-80ish zoom lens" club - PentaxForums.com
I have a few of these, most recently a Tokina AF28-70 (non-ATX).

The one to have, without wanting to spend too much money, is the Tokina 19-35 or the 20-35 f/3.5-4.5. I think Andrew_Oid showed how good it is, even at f/4.5. It is rated higher than the f/2.8 models that have the same range. Mine cost me like 90 dollars at KEH and they're usually less than 120. They are especially a good choice, if you think you might upgrade to the K-1 in the future - they are rated higher in overall sharpness (corner to corner) than the Tamron and Sigma 17-35mm models, which go for more money. It does need a hood though, and a regular 77mm hood woks well for APS-C.

The manual focus SMC Pentax-A 24-50mm f/4 is also highly rated. There's an AF version, the Pentax-F but that goes for more than a Pentax 16-45mm f4 so that one, I don't think I'd ever get, it makes no sense since the 16-45 is basically a 22-45mm f4 full frame lens.

agreed - I'm currently watching for an A24-50mm, but a Tokina 19-35 or 20-35mm would be OK too....

(I may need to sell a couple more lenses, now that the Rokinon 8mm is gone)

had a couple of manual zooms out this weekend; first, my queen of the manual zooms, the A 35-105mm f3.5:

but also had some time to spend with the new Tokina AT-X 150:

I paid $100 for my 20-35 with shipping. It is an AF lens though in that range I'd be inclined to focus manually anyway. It's good through the range, and where can you get a 20mm f3.5 for $100? More than that it's built like the proverbial tank.
I pulled the 35-105 out again after exercising some different lenses for awhile. I don't know how long it will stay on the camera as I'm eagerly awaiting a silver (46mm filter?) CZJ Tessar (12 blades!) made when I was in first grade (1955-58 by the serial number). My favorite lens of all time I think could very well be a Tessar mounted to a Zeiss Ikon Contessa LK fixed-lens camera made in the early sixties. It was an uncoated lens, but the colors and the way it rendered light were very special. I'm hoping . . .

Wow, nice FL will check eBay to see if any of them get listed. I am just beginning to do some bird work at longer FL, mostly with my D400mm f 5.6.

you'll see a couple from time to time - not as many as the AT-X 400mm prime lens... and normally not in K-mount, either...

More chocolate cookie lens specifications! I love it. We have to start getting those into the reviews!

Tokina RMC 35-105mm f3.5-4.3 lens

This arrived yesterday. Ain't she sweet? The serial number indicates it was made between 1955 and 1958 (I started first grade in 9/57.) making this perhaps my oldest lens. It's 40.5 mm filter size. If Taks are smooth, this lens is silky. There are no click stops for the aperture ring (and it's not a preset), so I'm wondering if it was made for cine use. There are twelve blades so the aperture is round from wide-open to closed down. The image pops into focus. I haven't taken any pictures with it yet because the light is very poor. It's heavily overcast. The lens has some coating though not the "T" coating. Less than $100 with shipping, and shipping to Thailand from England was about a quarter of the cost.
Pictures taken with the Tokina zoom in close-focus mode.
First Tessar photo is viewable at my Flickr page, "William Bolton" (Andrew Oid). I also added a review at PentaxForums lens reviews "Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm f2.8 Tessar".
