I have to admit I prefer the tamron adaptalls: more neutral/natural rendering and sharper contrast IMO. I am thinking specifically of the 40A 35-135mm, and the SP 28-135mm 28A.
Hello, Marcus.
Ordinarily, my camera sensor renders the photos a bit too cool for my taste. Normally, I'll change it to "Auto" WB in post-processing which is warmer and more to my taste. I also like Takumars for their warmish tone. I do like this lens. It's sharp and much like a Takumar in its rendering, i.e. color and contrast. I wish it had half-stops because I've come to prefer f9 for general scenics, but f8 is adequate. I think the focal range is very nice for a walk-around lens, and the f3.5-4.3 maximum aperture isn't a hindrance for me. The close focus mode also works well. And the price? Like new for $30?!
I had one very bad experience with a Tamron lens some years ago, an all purpose large focal range lens (28mm-200mm or something like that as I remember) that I took on a trip at my camera dealer's recommendation. The pictures were horribly soft. I've avoided them since. I lost the pictures I'd taken, but on returning I exchanged the lens for a mint SMC Takumar 85mm f1.8 lens and mint SMC Takumar 50mm f1.4 lens which got me started on my collection. At that time the used 85 was valued at around $100 ($75 to $125 as I remember).
I hesitated to post the last photo ("Looking Across the Rooftops") on my Flickr page, but it exploded today getting nominated for "Discover" and has so far 38 likes. Just goes to show . . .
Anyway, it's a good lens, and I would certainly recommend it. I think it's the only one I ever reviewed on Pentaxforums.
Cheers. (By the way I have a good friend from university who lives in Pwllheli. Beautiful country!)
As an afterthought, I don't think you can form a good impression of the lens sharpness from the posted images. My camera sensor captures RAW images that are 6000+ pixels by 4000+ pixels, and I reduce them to 1920 x 1080 in IrfanView before posting here or on Flickr. PentaxForums photo software doesn't render as crisply as Flickr's does to my eye either and doesn't permit as large an image though the file size submitted is the same.
