interesting... I had a Mir 1b, but haven't really used it all that much before selling it, as I got the silver version that was my grandfather's. From what I remember though, it was very good at greens and had a slight magenta cast in the shade... Your copy seems to have very punchy colours...

Helios 44M-3

I'm very glad I decided to keep this lens and file down the distance ring to enable good focus. It shares the sharpness of my M-4 and M-6 lenses but seems to model objects with more volume. I read somewhere that preset lenses can produce that effect because aperture placement relative to the lens elements is different. Anyone know anything about that?
Anyway, time to test this lens a bit more.
This photo, "In Light and Shadow", was taken at f11. (Sadly the lens lacks half stops. I'd much rather use f9.) There's a lot of detail in a proper enlargement and good modeling of the buildings, but those things can't be seen at the size reproduced here, so a crop at 100% is added.

I assume you mean Helios 44-3? The "M" and "K" suffix lenses are all auto-aperture. The others have preset aperture. I am looking forward to seeing your work with this lens.

My current Soviet lens lineup is only the Zenitar 16 fisheye. I've heard tell of a Soviet 20mm that is suppose to be quite good. I'm curious who has one and what do you think of it?

Yes, 44-3.
I hope to get some good shots with it to post here. The lens certainly has some good qualities.

Helios 44-3

I know people like photos taken with the lens wide-open, so here's one at f2 and at MFD. I was trying to focus on the point (with an assist from the adapter's focus confirmation). There was a slight breeze, but it's acceptably sharp I think. No cropping, no post-processing.

My standard resolution test at f8 with a crop reduced slightly from 100%.
I wonder about distances in these shots, three or four miles or more? Is it possible to calculate from the focal length of the lens and the size in the image? I guess you would have to know the actual height of a building(?).
