20 blades wouldn't be too fun to put back together Nice one!

SO close to pulling the trigger on a Tair 11 on ebay yesterday. Must...resist. I hate 135mm lenses and really want an M39 Jupiter 9, but the Tair looks soooo good...both as a lens and the images it produces.

Actually, it's not that bad at all. Yes, it can be tricky but with little bit of patience and understanding how it works, most people can do it without much problem.

Tair does produce superior image wide open.... gap narrows to almost equal at f5.6 or so.
Jupiter is lighter and obviously more compact. If I had to chose, I'd get Tair as 135/133 is better suited than 85 for me. Taking photos of wildlfie without disturbing it is little bit more challenging than photographing people with a little bit of extra distance in between.

The Tair is big and heavy, but it is so worth it!

I'm the opposite--I'd rather use an 85 for "portraits" since I have an 80-320 135mm is just too long or too short...but the Tair looks so good...and there's one on ebay that would match my Mir-1 Grand Prix perfectly

That extra stop over the Jupiter 11 would be worth it, definitely

My Soviet lens collection so far.
Started less than a year ago, I think I'm done for now, I have pretty much everything I need. Maybe another camera.

Bigger size: Soviet Lens collection (1)

Sure, I was just to lazy.
Not in particular order.
Helios 44-2 (a few different of them) 44-3, 44-3M, 44K-4, 44M-6, 44M-7, 77K-4 (x2)
Helios 40-2, MC Jupiter 9, MC Jupiter 37A, MC Volna 9, Volna 3
Jupiter 6-2, Jupiter 21M, Jupiter 11 (x2), Tair 11A (x2), Tair 11, Telemar 22
MC Zenitar-K2 (16), Zenitar M 1.7, Zenitar K 50, Industar 50-2, MTO 100, Tair 3S,
MC Tair 3S, Vega 12B (x2), Vega 28V, Mir 10A, Mir 1b, Mir 24M, Lomo PO60-2 (converted cinema lens), Kaleinar 3V, Teleconverters (x2), Telear N.

My interest/collection actually started because of this thread. I learn quite a bit about photography since then, still have a ways to go but going from P&S to using 99% all manual lenses was fun.

you have a very nice collection I still want to get my hands on a MC Volna 9 and maybe trade my Jupiter 9 for an MC version. Where abouts did you collect them all from?

how do you find the Tair-3s? I always think about getting one, then realise a modern 300mm is sooooooo much smaller and lighter, but something about it keeps the idea in my head

Most were bought from Russia/Ukraine trough Ebay.
IMO Tair 3 outperforms modern 300mm zooms by quite a bit. Pentax DA-L 55-300 kit lens than came with my Kx is no match to Tair.......but then again it's prime vs zoom.
It's not all that heavy but obviously less convenient than modern 300 lens.
From my personal experience, the Soviet made lenses are much better quality then the those made in Russia and especially Ukraine after the collapse of the USSR.

WOW. that is one hell of a lens collection. By the way, do you have any particular seller in ebay that you buy those lenses? And what is your take on the Mir 37mm f2.8? Is it good for street shooting and a bit of portraits (not head shots)?

I don't really have a particular seller, just bought whatever I though was reasonable didn't even check their feedback really. Some might say no returns but if your arrived item does not match their description than PayPay will resolve it in your favor. Never had a problem with lenses but with some other item.

Honestly, I haven't used Mir 1 that much, in my opinion it's pretty good lens but it's one of those lenses where it almost requires one with better photography skills, in other words it's not as easy to use as say Helios 44 series. Mainly the view is larger and focusing in low light is more challenging if you don't adjust preset aperture back and forth. At f2.8 it's a little soft but gets sharp at around 4. Overall I'd give it 7 out of 10. For how much they go for, it's worth at least play with.
Not the best photo (or beer), but a quick shot indoor.

Thanks.
Yes Mir 24M is a very good lens
I've tried Mir 24N ( with M42 adapter) but it had to much contrast and weird colors so I sold it and got M model, it's a better lens compared to N for sure. Not sure why so much difference between N and M, probably has to do with the different MC on N.
