Guys, I recently got a good ol' helios-44 f2, and when I set it wide open (based on the numbers anyway) the aperture is most obviously at its narrowest, and vice versa. Is this just a fault with the lens, or am I being silly? I've never used a lens with manual aperture before.

It is probably a preset lens. The ring you are turning is the aperture ring. Turn it to open the aperture. It should turn smooth without clicks.

Now, in front of that ring there is another ring. Turn that one in the same direction. It should turn with clicks. The numbers on that ring click in place corresponding to a mark. This is the preset ring. All it does is It blocking the other ring preventing the aperture to close at some point.

Now, with the first ring that you already found, you can quickly change from wide open to closed to the preset value, without taking your eye from the viewfinder.

The way to use it:
1 Set Aperture priority mode
2 Choose your aperture with the front ring.
3 Open the aperture.
4 Make composition and focus.
5 Close aperture with second ring, quickly without looking.
6 Let the Av mode select the speed
7 Shoot

How do you that AV mode has selected the appropriate speed? Is there any indication? What I'm doing now is I always press the green button to meter but it is in M mode.

Just try it. Av means that you use the dial to select the aperture, and let the camera select the apropriate shutter speed based on TTL metering. Of course, you have also selected ISO and if required compensation.

The aperture dial does not work with M42 lenses. In stead you select aperture on the preset lens. All the other systems work exactly like an automatic lens. No need to use the green button anymore.

Hello all, I need some DYI/modification advise.

I have just received my 1959 Jupiter 9! (8.5cm F2) It has a M39 mount. I already had an M39-M42 adapter and an original M42-K adapter. The lens fits on my K5 no problem.

The image is however extremely unsharp. I think the issue is that M39 lenses have a shorter index length (flange-film distance).

Is there any easy fix to get this M39 lens working on K-mount cameras?

Thanks

Yes, there isn't. You must have the rangefinder version. Just buy a Zorki/Kiev and use it to your liking.

Wow, that's so cool I also had the idea of making a moving picture, at one time, but I couldn't find an image host that would properly recognize GIF images.
BTW the lighting is also gorgeous. Did you use any additional lights?
