This lens has a very abrupt transition from in- to out-of-focus, even when stopped down some, which compounds the difficulty of the shallow depth-of-field. Other lenses are more forgiving of a slight mis-focus, but with the Helios 40, it's either perfectly in focus, or obviously blurry. The lens makes you feel like you missed a lot worse than you really did.
