Helios 44m with Zenit 12XP used as "normal" lens, pretty sharp:

Zenit 19 with Zenitar 1.7:

The lens suffers a little in backlight but this can be used at the photographer's advantage:

Zenitar ME-1 50/1.7 at f4. My apologies for the relatively uninteresting subjects. These are the things are normally test shoot on when getting something new.

That's a rare (and expensive) lens...did you use a Zenit 18 for this shot?

Mmm a pity, this lens is meant to be used on that camera and to be honest I don't think digital "pics" are useful to gauge the performance of a lens due to the pp you put on it...it's like to try to understand the tonal quality of a pickup in a electric guitar on the basis of a track on a hyper produced album.

True as are the rest of my m42 mount lenses. This is precisely why I didn't amass my m42 lens collection based on their respective performance (sharpness, contrast, color) levels on film but instead for the bit of character that they all bring to digital. When I need high performing, I reach for my native Canon and Fuji lenses. Besides, most of the screw mount lenses have seemed to perform very well adapted to all the digital bodies I've had over the last few years.

What is your experience with Helios 44M-7 ? I also wonder if it mounts well onto camera. 44M-2 wobbles.

The 44m-7 seems to give me the best look out of the ones I have - silver 44-2, 77m-4, 44m-7, 44m-4. As far as wobble and mounting goes, I haven't had issues with any of the four listed so far. The only m42 lens that has noticeable play for me is the zenitar.
