Industar 50-2 showed up on Saturday. Fun lens, seems a bit quirky, looks really funny on the camera.

These are unedited test shots.

This one is a bit soft.

Now the same shot taken with Industar 50-2 vs. Helios 44k-4.

An export copy! Common wisdom claims that they're less likely to have quality control issues than the domestic versions, but whether there's any truth to that is hard to say. (With the Industar I'd be very surprised if there was.)

What's the production date on yours?

My '82 (or was it '84?) domestic version (pictured with CZJ Tessar relative):

How do i tell date? I didn't think of there being different import/export copies. Seems almost all that pulled up in Ebay when i searched "Industar 50-2" had the "english name" on them.

Serial is 79008879.

I'm guessing from a quick google search this would be 1979?

That would be '79, yeah. First two digits in Soviet serials are generally, though not always, the year.

It's not a minty copy. If i like this one enough i might try to snag one of the "NOS" copies on Ebay, or just save my money and put it towards the next Soviet purchase. I'd like to get my hands on a Zenitar 16.

I have a new Zenitar 16. Kind of boring on the k3, but quite a nice lens on an old spotmatic - brilliant how small these FF lenses compared to most new glass. I love the look of them too - to quote a photo geek friend "what IS that?" In comparison, my rokinon 8mm is gigantic.

One minor recent addition - a Jupiter 50mm F2 (M39) which I found on one of my father's old Leicas. Really rather impressed.

50/2 in m39 mount? A Jupiter-8 then, and a very nice lens. Optically it's a copy of the pre-war Zeiss Sonnar 50/2 that was made for the Contax-II and -III.

Yup - Jupiter 8 - black version (?) . A cursory look on ebay finds a bunch of silver versions which I'd actually prefer as the other Leica camera lenses are all silver too. Looking to match them up with a silver compact ILC body at some point. Don't really know what much about the lens tbh.

I have this lens and it is almost too sharp for my taste... but fun nonetheless...
