Reportage with a Tak 55

I went out for a late lunch and ran into some police action at the Plaza de Armas. They even had the water cannon deployed. Occasionally, the police would run here or there and whistles would be blown, but I couldn't make much sense of what was going on. The shops facing the plaza were all shuttered. When I went into the supermarket that also faces the plaza later after lunch (Only one shutter was raised to permit the entry of customers.) there were more police inside than customers. I wanted to jokingly ask one of the sales attendants if the revolution had started but then thought I'd better not. I asked her, in my poor Spanish, what was going on outside. I thought she said something about Chile and Peru and suspected it was about a football match between the two countries, but then I thought that was absurd. Actually, my landlord confirmed that that was the case. There's a match between Arequipa and a team from Santiago tonight. Five Chilean troublemakers have been taken into custody. Go Arequipa!

You need to remember soccer fans get a bit over excitable and will do things at risk of giving them a criminal record for life over what some colourfully clad employees of their favourite soccer business do on the field. Seems to be about the only sport where this phenomenon happens.

Great use of Tak 55. You were wise. In my own travels I have come to learn that my brand of humor does not always travel very well!

The other thing I thought when I saw you picture was "road closed for police incident". We often hear that on the media. The police should be told to have their incidents in places it does not bother anyone else.

More seriously, I would be cautious about taking pictures of the police as close as that. I was once in France, walking along the street with an American friend. She was told off for raising her camera in the general direction of some police at about whole police car framing distance.

Chile-Peru relations

Arequipa won the match 1-0 I was told by my grinning landlord who also gleefully mentioned that one of the other guests was from Chile and had come to see the match.
This article I think sheds light on the underlying friction between the two countries: The complex relationship between Peru, Bolivia and Chile: A legacy of the War of the Pacific .

That's a great picture, nice and moody, but not too dark and the bokeh is lovely.

A sheep contemplating its life's ambition. All sheep have the same life's ambition: to get killed as soon as possible in the most spectacularly stupid way possible, preferably involving great heights or fast moving vehicles. (55mm/2.0 Super)
