You can pick up a 55mm/2.0 for spare change these days, and after all it's just a little taste test to see if you like it. What's the worst that could happen? It's not like you're going to end up with a lifelong addiction that'll leave you scouring the thrift shops in every town you visit, spending hours scrolling through auction sites looking for mis-listed rarities at cheap prices, agonising over whether you prefer the Super Takumar or Super-Multi-Coated versions, or finding that you can't stand to use an AF lens anymore because your Takumars just feel so right. That's never happened to any of us.
I started by buying the 55/2.
Then I got, not in this order, 20/4.5, 24/3.5, 28/3.5, 35/3.5, 35/2, 50/1.4, 50/4, 55/1.8, 85/1.9, 100/4, 105/2.8, 120/2.8, 135/2.5, 135/3.5, 150/4, 200/4, 200/3.5, 300/4, 300/6.3. And then it stopped.
