The K-mount version of the Sears (Rikenon?) f/1.7 50mm is an excellent lens; it's probably available in m42 as well. Not Takumar weight & build, but my go-to normal lens for a K-mount body, if I don't want to but my m42 adapter in to mount my f/1.4 or f/1.8 normal Taks.

Okay. I've got an Oly 50, access to an M 50/1.7, and I have an SMC 55/1.8. Why am I looking at 50/1.4 Super Taks again?

Because it's a wonderful lens! Because why not collect the full set?

I have the M 50/1.7, K 55/2, A 50/1.7, A 50/2.8 macro, Auto-Takumar 55/2.2, SMC Takumar 50/1.4 and today an early version of the Super Takumar 50/2 (with the 2 to the left on the aperture ring) arrived. They are all good in different ways. The 1.4 gives superb bokeh and really narrow dof wide open.

Some bluebells with the Super Takumar 50/2 on K5 from this morning.

Missing the M42 Macro Takumar 50, particularly the pre-set version... Gives a whole new perspective.

I've been looking... The A 50/2.8 macro is pretty awesome though.

Well I know this is the Takumar Club, and I bow to no-one in my love for my Taks, but the best 50mm I've ever used is still my 1947 Kodak Anastigmat f/3.5.

Of course, I haven't tried the M37 Takumar 50mm/3.5 yet, so I'm still open to persuasion.

It's the sharpest, by a huge margin -- the amount of fine detail it resolves is just crazy. Also it's completely uncoated and causes no perceptible shift away from real-world colours as far as I can see. Of course it's an absolute pig to use with its primitive 1940s controls, which is why I use my Super Takumar 55mm/2.0 for most day-to-day photography instead.

I bet that the M37 Takumar 50mm/3.5 would beat it though.

Lovely.

A random brain cell fired off last night. Tucked away in a box, I remembered that I have a survivor 50/1.4 Super Takumar. "Survivor" is being kind. The diaphragm would be balky for automatic use, there are no detents for the aperture ring, the filter ring is dented. There is dust but no fungus and no yellowing. From what I read it's a 7-element version. I have no idea where I got it or how long ago. I suspect that it was a flea market find, based on the condition. I've got nothing to lose by trying to gently clean it up and seeing how it images, eh? Come the weekend, I'll try to post up images of it and by it.

Beautiful, beautiful shots with the SMC Tak 28mm. It is easy to see why I like that lens too.

They were made to a different standard compared to the plastic lenses of today. If it has no yellowing maybe you have an 8-element version. I have a 7-element version in pristine condition but my 8-element version was bought from a pawn shop with signs of significant usage which is not a bad sign. I also used it for many years and although it is not cosmetically perfect externally it is optically perfect and that is where it counts. Good luck with your survivor.
