Smile. The 85 to me is a special lens. Looking into the glass is like gazing into the crystal clear water of a deep pool. And I've always thought the day will come when I warm up to the focal length and come to appreciate it even more. Now, if anyone has an 85mm Ultra-Achromatic lens in good condition they'd like to trade, I might be persuaded . . .

Oh, you had better have deep pockets full of money if you want one of those.

Hi, Ray.
There's only one review of it in the lens reviews that says only 25 were made. I seem to remember reading somewhere else that most of them were bought by forensics and science labs. There was a European man, perhaps from the Netherlands, maybe the same man who wrote the review, who posted some pictures he took with it. They were beautiful and the color palette and contrast were distinctive. The reviewer did say that color fidelity was a characteristic of the lens with its unique quartz and fluorite composition. I was only joking of course, but I'm keeping my eyes open. :-)

I found the images: http://forum.mflenses.com/85mm-f-4-5-ultra-achromatic-takumar-t47797.html . Also, this is interesting: https://jmcscientificconsulting.com/testing/asahi-pentax-ultra-achromatic-ta...matic-imaging/ .

Few more film shots from the last couple rolls from a few months ago, these with the tak 50 1.4 8 element. Film used is Portra 400. Camera Spotmatic.

For a 55 year old lens the wide open performance really holds up.

Some pictures were posted on the forum by that person - the results were stunning.

Oh, I knew that they were rare but I had no idea that they only made such a small quantity. Thank you so much for those links. I agree, the images produced by that lens are just wonderful. Very pleasing to the eye.
I had a friend in the States who was obsessed with getting a complete set of SMC Takumars. Of course, he was having difficulty finding the Ultra-Achromatic lenses. One day I happened to find an 85mm for sale for $5000 and I let him know about it. To my surprise, he bought it. Sadly, he is no longer with us but I will always remember his passion and devotion to Spotmatics and Takumar lenses.

Here's one of my grandson taken earlier today with an SMC Takumar 105mm f/2.8 at f/4. I think I nailed focus on his right eye thanks to my Fujifilm X-T20's excellent focus peaking. The slight softness that in my view just makes a portrait look better is probably due to hand-holding at 1/20 second, firmly leaning on the wall, and the film-like grain due to the 1600 ISO. The colors are pure Takumar. For the poster in another thread wondering why anyone bothered with the old vintage lenses, here's your answer.

Old therapy dog getting some therapy of her own at the park this morning. For a dog, that means sun, cool grass, and a ball to chase. Super-Takumar 50/1.4.

Same lighthouse as in the shot above and also with the 17mm, but a couple of nights earlier and in completely different light. Also with a CMOS (K-S1) rather than the CCD (GX-10) used above, and with much less naturalistic processing.

Looks great, Dave (in spite of the cmos sensor). 😀
