Lol. It's supposed to be a turkey. Great holiday, it centers around a big meal and sports

Gawd. Ain’t that the truth. Miz LX went into the spare bedroom this week and came out saying “there’s a thousand lenses in there.” While that’s not true, there are a wad of Taks in there.

One needs to leave...look at my ad for a 300... JS.

Haha thanks! I actually asked this question separately, but what other Takumars are really 'special'? I've owned a few 50's, I can tell the 50 8 element is in a league of its own. What I didn't know about M42 lenses is they seem to work like my lensbaby range of lenses, in that they support Av mode and stopping down works. With my K Mount lens stopping down in Av mode does nothing, and that's somewhat limiting for certain event work. I really just assumed that a screw mount and age of the lens would place them in the same category as a K Mount and that any aperture recognition would have to be used in Manual mode on the camera. So this is great news for me (because I vowed only to collect A setting lenses for this reason) but now it seems the M42 mount is also a contender.

Right now I have 2-3 focal ranges that need filled up, 85, 135 and 200. I have owned the Samyang 85 and sold it to help fund the FA77. The 85 is not so important a gap due to owning the 85. I wouldn't mind a fast 135 or 200. The K200/4 is soft at f4 but gets significantly better at f5.6, so I'm just curious to know if any of these other Takumar M42 mounts are worthy adversaries or not...

Yeah - I won’t refer to my wife a “Miz simple1” for obvious reasons , but she had a similar reaction some time back. I’m currently going through and getting rid of duplicates. I have 4 extra Tak 50/1.4s, same for 55/1.8s, other Taks, Mamiyas, etc.

I think they reproduce when nobody’s looking.

I use my M42 Takumars in AV mode.

I set the lens in M, so the aperture opens or closes when you change the aperture ring.

This way I focus, set the desired aperture and then the camera selects the shutter speed to suit. I have the ISO setting at a fixed value, depending on light and expected noise effects, and other factors associated with the reasoning that goes into full manual exposure.

The old M42 A mode is not available on any K or later mount camera because it relied on some plate to press a pin in the mount end of the lens that is not in K mount bodies.

I was aware of turkeys but not of orbiting ones, let alone sports...

You did not mention 35mm but the old (big) 35mm f/2 Takumar is very nice, more interesting that the 49mm filter version. However it has some serious vignetting on FF. Concerning a (somewhat) fast 135mm I hesitate to say it here but the Fujinon 135mm f/2.5 is a great lens. ( I have a couple of M42 Fujinons now and they are fine, but they all need servicing the aperture blades that have gone slow while the Takumars do not.)

I own a lensbaby burnside 35mm for my 35mm needs, and will likely finish my trio of FA ltds with the FA 31. I also have a F28 to tie me over. So yeh, its above and beyond 77mm really for now. And I will possibly collect the new DFA 85 at some point (for the AW/WR aspect if nothing else), but the 135 and 200 lengths still are of interest to me.

Look into the Takumar 200mm f3.5 (unless you do not prefer preset lenses). I really like mine and they seem to be highly regarded by most owners.
Best.
