M Mode: Set aperture, press green button, press shutter release.
Av: Set aperture, press shutter release.
On my K-3 (and it was the same with the K10 and K20), "green button" metering (mainly with my K series glass) is regularly 3 or 4 stops over. Thankfully using the histogram helps get it right. I've largely given up using it. Mostly I take the photo, check the histogram, adjust and retake it. If I know I want to photograph something that moves, I'll pack more modern glass.
PS Much easier with Taks where I can use Av and the auto/man switch on the lens to open and shut the aperture.
