hm..surprising that is is so different in China.
but I should add: almost all the portraits I have taken recently and of those shown in this thread had been taken of people with whom I had established a relationship, had known the people at least for a few days and had spent quite some time with each before taking the photo. If not and it is somebody I just met or somebody sitting next to me in a coffee shop ( e.g. some of the latest uploads to my flickr stream from Saigon ) I usually deliberately take a long time before taking the photo, playing with my manual lens, maybe making the impression that I do not know what I am doing, or that I am experimenting, which often I really do
and I ask if I can take the photo
