Mike, set your timer and take a pic of yourself crossing that bridge.
I will politely ask to be excused, thank you.

Bugger.
ha, you point at what I found to be a BIG difference when taking photos of people back in Europe or in places like Nepal and Vietnam: back 'home' people take an unnatural look, here they put on 'their' face, one may speculate about the reason of this difference.
Anyhow I almost completely stopped taking candids, I prefer potraits where people take 'a stance', photos which include communication with me, the photographer.

It's ten times worse in China... Maybe it's the delicate nature of the Asian mentality, but I gave up trying to take photos on the streets, since I offend everybody.

hm..surprising that is is so different in China.
but I should add: almost all the portraits I have taken recently and of those shown in this thread had been taken of people with whom I had established a relationship, had known the people at least for a few days and had spent quite some time with each before taking the photo. If not and it is somebody I just met or somebody sitting next to me in a coffee shop ( e.g. some of the latest uploads to my flickr stream from Saigon ) I usually deliberately take a long time before taking the photo, playing with my manual lens, maybe making the impression that I do not know what I am doing, or that I am experimenting, which often I really do and I ask if I can take the photo

Thanks, Andi.

I regret trying to "clear" the yellowing out of the 50mm/1.4 when I first got it, now my favorite feature. Forgive me, kind and compassionate Takumar gods!

In the original of this photo the ship's name (Sunrise Peony) is clearly legible on the stern.
