beautiful 18 blades - I guess they are not able to make that anymore. IMO the background of that flower shot was a little dificult.
must be my imagination, but go back and look at the bokeh, some of the OOF highlights look hexagonal. That;s why I asked. I know my lens has 18 blades, but did not know if there were varients

I'll have to double check, as I also thought that when I looked at mine, it had more than 18. Good project for tonight.

edit - just checked, and I was wrong. Mine does have 18.

There are 2 versions of that preset lens. They have the same number of elements/groups (4/4) but the newer one focuses a little closer 2.5 vs. 2.7. There may be differences in the number of blades but I think they both have a lot.

Edit: The older one is supposed to weigh 750 g (1959-61) and the newer one at 900 g (1962-66).

today was maybe my first bad experience buying a lens, but maybe not. i meet a guy this morning to buy a SMC Tak 50/1.4 for $60 that he said was in very good condition. in one of the emails i sent him over the week i asked does it have any scratches, internal dust, diaphragm problems etc. all he said was you have every right to inspect the lens. so i figured whatever maybe he forgot i asked. so today i meet him, he gives me the lens to look at, and theres smudges and dust all over the front and back element, what looked like it could have been faint scratches from someone cleaning it incorrectly, and the internals are coated with a fine layer of dust (it was bright daylight, i could see it perfectly) so i mentioned this stuff and he says none of that will affect the image quality blah blah blah. so i tried to let him down nice and say ill pass, but he was clearly unhappy (guy drove 30 minutes there and back). then he says he will sell it for $50, so then i offered him $40, he says $50 and its yours, i say no, then he takes $40 for it and storms off. i was kind of pissed because i figured why did i even buy it for $40 its probably junk. after getting home from work i cleaned it and the front and back elements were fine just really dirty. i tested it and there is a spec of dust that starts to show up very faintly at f4 and is obvious at f8. so i guess for $40 i got an awesome specialty lens unless i ever take it apart to clean it (never done that to a lens). so am i an idiot for buying this? sorry for the long story.

these are all shot between f1.4 and f2

I hate to say it, but I would agree with the bad deal assessment. I would have passed and waited on something in better condition.

$40 for an SMC 50mm f1.4 with a rubber grip is pretty good. If the wear is only cosmetic, you should be able to sell it for $80 on Ebay, twice of what you paid for.

Perhaps shooting through the hexagonal cyclone fence caused some sort of optical interference?

1,4/50mm

I snatched a few lenses here to play with. The latest is SMC 1.4/50.

The Super-Tak 1.4 was pretty yellowed, when I received it about 3 months ago. It looked out of my window for most of the time and now the colorization is almost gone.

ya like i said the only problem is internal dust that starts barely showing up at f4 and at f8 its obvious. im going to hold onto it and take it apart one day to get the dust out.
