This one is very quiet and does not do interesting tricks for the camera.

Need to get out with my new, to me, Super Tak 105/2.8.
How did you get that dog to sit so still?

My Katz-Eye cleared Customs this morning so I hope to have it installed by tomorrow night.

If I had tried this next shot with the K20D there is no way in hell the ship's name would have been legible (this is a severe crop). Goodness knows I tried it often enough. I only tried it with the K-5 out of curiosity....and I was very pleasantly surprised.

Come to think of it, the only lenses I've used so far have been the Auto-Tak and Preset varieties. The lower contrast makes the rear screen reviews (and histograms) look not-so-hot but that's easily fixed in post-processing. I suppose I could also scrounge up some hoods to put on them.

This thread is awesome! I have my dad's old Super-Tak's. 35 3.5, 50 1.4 and 135 3.5

I bought the adapter, so I am going to have to give them a workout and try to produce something worthy of this thread.

Just scored a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 85/1.8

So here are the first quick test shots. JPEGs straight out of camera (just downsized). All shot wide open at f1.8 while using Takumar hood. B&W ones were shot in K-x Monochrome mode.
I just have the stock focus screen so manual focusing was very tricky. Focusing in Live View with 2x-4x zoom helped a lot - and I just love that you can compose your shot in B&W that way ...

#1 1/25s handheld @ ISO 5000

#2 2s long exposure @ ISO 100 (used a little log as impromptu tripod)

3 1/13s handheld @ ISO 6400

#4 1/125s handheld @ ISO 2500

#5 1/125s handheld @ ISO 3200

It's real good at lying around.

No complaints there.

The Post Office delivered my Katz-Eye at about 7:30 this evening and it is such an incredible feeling of relief to finally have it installed. The last several days have been very frustrating without it...a brand-new camera that was damned near impossible to focus!

Something in my mind tells me I have posted this one before, but my flickr tags tell me I haven't. Kindly indulge me if this is a re-post.

Nope Mike, don't recall having seen that one before. I think I'd remember the legs.

Glad you got the Katz-Eye - I consider that something one has to add to the budget (like a spare battery) when getting a new camera. I've been lusting after a K-5 exclusively for the the high ISO. Your 12800 shots from the other day look like 800 shots on my K200D. I suppose I best get saving.

Do let us know if anything else about it wows you.

On an unrelated note, hi all. I've been quietly watching but haven't had anything to post for a while. I went to Kenya for three weeks over xmas, but didn't take any takumars in case they got stolen. Since I've been back home I've been doing mostly paid assignments, none of which have seen much tak use either. I've also been looking for more serious work, and dealing with a family crisis, so snapping has had to take a back seat.

I stuck my camera on the back of a tak today (as Mike will attest, cameras go on lenses, not the other way around) but didn't shoot anything. C'est la vie.

A great many great photos have been posted here of late. I look forward to adding to their number again soon. Keep up the good work folks.

Just did some casual tests shooting outside my truck window and it looks like the "Auto EV Compensation" feature actually works.

I have with me the Auto-Takumar 55/2, S-M-C Takumar 35/3.5, and Takumar 105/2.8 (Preset). I did shots wide open, at f5.6, and f16 and compared the images and looked at the histograms. The widest shots were slightly under, but only slightly. There is a consistency between the shots that wasnt obtainable for Av mode Takumar shooting before. When I get a chance I will try to set up and take a series of example shots to post.
My screwmount adapter just arrived from Pentax yesterday, so I hope to try this out this weekend. Now I suppose a Katz Eye will be the next needed item for shoting with the Taks. Thanks for discovering this Mike....

Is it my screen that is to dark or is it the photo that is a bit dark?

It looks damn nice on my iTouch!!!

And you know snow is tricky, right? That it will tend to underexpose?

But from what I'm looking at now, seems you did it right.

Hi Ira,
I use spot metering all the time. Over the years I have learned the point it at something with a middle tone, so when I push the green button I get it approx. right. Then there is PP to adjust the curve in ACR. The photo was taken at 3:25PM so the sun had less influence on metering.
