I've been out of the Takumar Club loop for a good month or more, there's been some great photos here recently, glad to join in again. Here's a few taken with the Super Tak 55mm.

with lightbox & off camera flash

Lumiquest Softbox 3 test

Not showing the 55's optical quality but sometimes an image is more than just being sharp.

SMC Takumar 55/1.8.

Cotoneaster. The birds eat all the berries weeks ago, so only the stalks are left. It was frosty and a bit foggy, so even wide open hand holding the camera gave blurred images. By the time I got the tripod for this shot much of the frost had thawed. This is at about f4

Does the "quality" of the Takumars go in this order, or is there even an order?

takumar
super takumar
smc takumar
s-m-c takumar

I have some of each, and was just curious.

It depends on your definition of "quality". The age order is

Takumar
Super Takumar
S-M-C Takumar
SMC Takumar

The SMC Takumars have a rubberised grip, which IMO makes them look less "quality" than the S-M-C Takumars, but the coatings are supposed to be the same. The Super Takumars are single coated so they will have more problems with flare than the later versions. (But some Super Takumars, apparently, got the SMC coating.) The early Takumars are preset.

One could argue that the K lenses (that is lenses with K mount and marked smc Pentax with no A, M, etc ) belong to this list since they used the same lens formula. The smc Pentax-M lenses were designed to be smaller than the K lenses (or Takumars).

Haven't posted here for a while again, not been having much time for photography lately unfortunately. Here's one from last week though, Super Takumar 50mm f1.4. It's the inside of one of the 7 colleges on the downtown University of Toronto campus. Gorgeous place, many a wedding in the summer there because of it:

I made a box thingy out of black paper to allow the flash I mount on my camera to point at and trigger an optical slave but not light up the subject. I'm playing with ways to produce strong directional light with these cute little lights I bought.

More Taks.... Yesterday I bought this set consisting of a black Spotmatic SPII and nothing but Super-Multi-Coated Takumar primes (50/1.4, 35/3.5 and 135/3.5). Nothing important but still nice to have, especially because this whole set cost me less than one new Pentax battery for my K20D. If you think about it this is a bloody shame, as the early 70's Joe Sixpack had to work several months to have enough money for this set.

...and of course everything works. Naturally the focus action on the lenses is still buttery smooth, even after nearly 40 years. The Takumars never have let me down!

By the way, the sharpening on this shot is a little harsh (default action in IrfanView, the picture viewer I usually use to post something quick) but it was done in style: with the 35mm f/2 Super-Takumar (Big Bertha).

You could take that simple set and churn out wonderful pictures for as many more years as they keep on making film. Here lately I've been using my film cameras almost to the point of neglecting my K20D.

Cold out today. I was wanting to take a few pictures today, but when I got out there, it was just to darn cold. I did how ever feel sorry for this poor horse being out there. This is about the only shot I got.

Meanwhile, the horse was feeling sorry for the poor two-legged sap lacking a fur coat.

Beautiful image. Poor horse. I'm staying inside where it's warmer. We have all the cold (10 degrees f), but of course, no snow.
