The Tak 20 does have a reasonable amount of barrel distortion, see the reviews, and pictures there.

It is part of what I find likeable about the lens. If the M20 is a different optical design that will be different. Check.

Very very nice as usual, Simon!

Taken in hazy sun with a Super Tak 105/2.8....such a sweet handling lens

Quite a striking contrast between the background and foreground in that shot. I like it.

The 20mm does have some barrel distortion, but this isn't at all uncommon in super wide angles, and if one frames the shot carefully with the "horizon" in the center the effect is greatly minimized. That's why I included the bus stop photo in the samples. All the verticals look vertical to me, and bowing of the lines isn't discernible.

Thanks, I'm trying to decide between the ST20 or the M20 at the moment. Leaning towards the ST since the M is going for absurd prices.
I just paid $230 (plus $30 import duty), for an excellent copy of the SMC version from Japan. It is a bit high for a Takumar, but I think it was a fair price. They're not that common, and the price I paid was at the lower end of what was being asked on eBay the week before last.

That price is pretty good. In 2012, most of the ones sold on eBay went for USD250-260. I got mine from a US seller, with hood, for USD200 as the only bidder.

My comment about the distortion should be read as descriptive, not judgemental. I like how this lens works. Actually, having seen images from some closer to true rectilinear very wide lenses makes me feel that they look unnatural because of the lack of this distortion.

anime frame grab

I was watching the final episode of a current anime (Japanese cartoon), "Dimension W", today and saw this. Usually when real world objects and brands are depicted in anime, the spelling is changed, but not here. Members of this club will appreciate this I think.

It looks like part of the pineapple is in focus. f5.6 might've given you the result you were looking for.

Great catch! Prolly didn't hurt that it is a no longer a company with copy write's to protect... but still, cool. I still have an old H3 and F on the shelf, mostly for display these days.

So much accurate detail in the rendering! The DOF scale is beautiful. It's probably the artist's own camera. He saw an opportunity to give homage to Pentax/Takumar and took it. Photography didn't figure in the show.

SMC Takumar 20mm f4.5

Two more with the 20mm from today. A couple of inches to the right and the first photo would've been much more dramatic I think. The central vertical would have been perfectly centered and the photo would've popped. Oh well, a learning experience. These were taken at f9 I think.
