It's been a while since I posted in here. All taken with a Super Takumar 85 f1.9 @ f4.0 through f8.0 yesterday afternoon.

Cheers. I've been looking over and re-editing a few of my shots with this lens and forgot how pleasing the bokeh can be. You're pushing my memory, but i'm quite sure it was f3.5.

Testing some Lenses

RobbieC - I really enjoyed your equestrian action shots - VERY nice!

--

I'm testing some lenses in anticipation of purchase, so here are a couple of test shots. Having some fun!

Both were taken with Pentax K100D Super body, ISO800.

First one is using a Super-Macro-Takumar 50mm f4, titled "Pea-pickin' Flower" - of a sugar-snap pea flower in my garden. Pretty flowers on this variety, and the peas are just as sweet!

Second one is using a Super-Tele-Takumar pre-set 300mm f6.3, titled "Hanging by a Thread" - of a wire connected to my house. I took this one into the direction of the sun to check for flare, etc., and it was a good test of bokeh. It was stopped down to about f11. This thing is a MONSTER with a tripod-collar ring, but I was using it handheld, and it has innumerable sections in the aperture, so it makes nice round aperture & bokeh stopped down.

My first trip into a river this year....and I assed up all the settings from being out of practice. I forgot to switch from jpg (b/w) to raw, forgot to disable SR when shooting from the tripod.

To make it even worse, it wasn't even the spot I wanted to shoot, or thought that I was going to shoot when I went into the river. In most places the moutain rivers around here are fairly shallow, rarely getting over about mid-thigh on me. From a bridge I spotted a couple of good small waterfalls on the upstream side, but no way to lower myself down the steep embankments to the river about 25 feet below. In such cases I scout around downstream and then walk/climb my way back up to where I want to shoot, and the downstream side of the bridge looked manageable. So I got my gear together, tied a knotted rope to the guardrail, and made my way down the somewhat-less-steep bank to the water.

After I got in I made my way upstream to just below the bridge and discovered that the river narrowed down to about six feet there and formed a basin that looked to be about five feet deep and maybe twenty feet long, with both sides steep and slick bedrock...and the falls I wanted to shoot just out of sight around a turn. The only way up there was to swim, which I really wouldn't mind were it not for the fact I have no way to keep my gear out of the water.

So I was in a bit of a disappointed mood and almost left without taking any photos at all. I either have to figure out some watertight container to put my stuff into or figure out how to rappel myself down the upstream side. I could have just taken photos from the bridge, but I figure there must be hundreds of folks around here who have those shots.

The next shot is the view from where I went in the river. I have to cross this pool, climb over the mini-falls, and hang a right to put me directly under the bridge.

These shots all tend to end up looking the same and aren't terribly interesting, I know, but I do have a hell of a good time taking them. As far as I'm concerned, the only way to shoot this sort of river is to get in the river.

Hey Mike,

Ever see the goofy looking chest waders with an innertube around the waist? I think they're sold for flyfishing (though I haven't been flyfishing in more than a decade).

Son's high school graduation tonight, and I saw the arena and where to sit for the best shots, if I get there early enough.

I don't know what the hell to bring.

For before the ceremony, and during, no problem using the 50 Tak, and the kit for the wide stuff. But when he's walking across the stage, I'm guessing I HAVE to use the auto Tammy 90 in a full auto mode.

This is giving me agita. My 200 Tak is the longest reasonable length to bring (forget the 300), but I don't have much experience with it.

I can't put any photos up....for a few reasons...mainly, I'm shooting film....secondly I'm not really computer literate.....thirdly my photos wouldn't be very special,......but really.....I just have to say,....I just LOVE using these "OLD" Takumar lenses ( & my Spotmatic 11)....they're just something special.
Cheers, Pickles.

...from something that plays in my room, to something that gets played in my room:

K200D; SMC Takumar 55/f2

I almost never use this 55, mostly because I've got two other faster fifties, a third on loan from a friend, and a fourth in the post (the early Super Takumar mentioned a few posts ago). Still, it's not a poor performer, and as it came from my Dad's old gear I like to give it a spin once in a while...

A recent purchase Auto Takumar 55/2.2 taken at f2.2. This lens is very sharp fully open and the background bokeh is nice and smooth.
