My first trip into a river this year....and I assed up all the settings from being out of practice. I forgot to switch from jpg (b/w) to raw, forgot to disable SR when shooting from the tripod.
To make it even worse, it wasn't even the spot I wanted to shoot, or thought that I was going to shoot when I went into the river. In most places the moutain rivers around here are fairly shallow, rarely getting over about mid-thigh on me. From a bridge I spotted a couple of good small waterfalls on the upstream side, but no way to lower myself down the steep embankments to the river about 25 feet below. In such cases I scout around downstream and then walk/climb my way back up to where I want to shoot, and the downstream side of the bridge looked manageable. So I got my gear together, tied a knotted rope to the guardrail, and made my way down the somewhat-less-steep bank to the water.
After I got in I made my way upstream to just below the bridge and discovered that the river narrowed down to about six feet there and formed a basin that looked to be about five feet deep and maybe twenty feet long, with both sides steep and slick bedrock...and the falls I wanted to shoot just out of sight around a turn. The only way up there was to swim, which I really wouldn't mind were it not for the fact I have no way to keep my gear out of the water.
So I was in a bit of a disappointed mood and almost left without taking any photos at all. I either have to figure out some watertight container to put my stuff into or figure out how to rappel myself down the upstream side. I
could have just taken photos from the bridge, but I figure there must be hundreds of folks around here who have those shots.
The next shot is the view from where I went in the river. I have to cross this pool, climb over the mini-falls, and hang a right to put me directly under the bridge.

These shots all tend to end up looking the same and aren't terribly interesting, I know, but I do have a hell of a good time taking them. As far as I'm concerned, the only way to shoot this sort of river is to get
in the river.
