I have to get a life.

S-Tak 85 1.9

Edit:

I just remembered that there's an interesting story about this shot, but I'm leaving the office now. Will post later.

I noticed a 105mm S-M-C Tak went for $209 on ebay. As far as I have read there aren't any super rare variants of the 105mm, any idea as to why this one went so high?

(Pentax SMC Takumar f2.8/105 M42 Lens, Magnificent Cond. - eBay (item 130397615484 end time Jun-13-10 18:05:40 PDT))

The prices are going through the roof now for these M42s. They're not only great lenses, but the only ones coming to market are through people who realize this. In other words, it's not like someone's aunt is going to find a 1:1.2 Tak in the attic and sell it for 10 bucks because "it's taking up space."

I just spent $200 plus for a 35 2 Super, and the minimum price you can expect to get a 50 1.4 is $85 in fair to good to very condition, depending on your luck.

Excellent goes to $100 and beyond.

Also remember that when Pentax comes out with a full frame body, these lenses will cover the new sensor and work perfectly, albeit in manual mode.

I don't know what would make that one go for so much unless it was the condition. I know the multi-coated ones generally go for more, but I just won a Super Tak 105mm for $47 a few days ago. I'm anxiously awaiting that, a Helios 44-2 and an M42 adapter.

It was probably a combination of condition, S-M-C, hood and the heat of a bidding war. There were 28 bids on it. That was about 75 too high IMHO.

A lot of these lenses are ending up in front of several other brands and have been for a while.

I have the 105 S-Tak, but I'm not a fan of my copy at all. However, shots from the coated versions I've seen are just great. Might just be me.

My Helios 44-2, however, provided spectacular results from the one afternoon I shot with it. (And I only paid 15 bucks in mint condition!) I think it matches the S-Tak 50 1.4 in image quality, but the bokeh is really, really funky in a GOOD way.

You'll definitely have fun with that one.

Do you have the links for those sales?

Is it just me, or do the Canons have a tendency to overexpose?
The other day went fishing with some friends, and the pictures that came from a Canon are so overexposed they make my eyes hurt, no kidding.

The Helios is here and the Super Takumar is here. At least, they are if those links work right.

The SMC with rubber ring is better. It's worth a good $120 in excellent condition.

The Super Multi Coated in all metal casing is older and has an inferior coating.
Where did you come up with this? The optics and coatings are the same. The S-M-C was made 1971 & 1972, and the SMC one was made 1973-75.

Items not posted any more, but no big deal.

You know that the Helios is preset with a stop-down ring, right? If you have any questions about using one, just ask.

I had read that the ones with rubber grips are superior in image quality.

I'm sure the optics are the same but the coating should have been upgraded as well. So did they just upgrade a rubber grip and that's it?

The grip was pretty much all that was different. If you look, you will see that there were only about 4 or 5 prime models that were upgraded to SMC from S-M-C. For example, the Super-Multi-Coated 85mm f1.8 went to k-mount. There is the possibility that the coatings evolved but they did that within models anyway and the S-M-C 85mm f1.8 is no slouch.

I had read that non multi-coated lenses are superior in bokeh quality, although the multi-coated ones have the better edge in sharpness.
