I finally found/received an original adapter and today the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 55mm f/1.8 also arrived, so now I can finally join this Club!

Now I don't have any experience with these old wonders, but to me the build quality of this 55mm seems AMAZING - is this what I can expect from all the old Taks or am I giving it too much credit because I am so happy that the lens arrived today ?

Can't wait to get home from work to try it out...!

This is what you can expect--they're built like TANKS, and make wonderful weapons.

If that is the lens I thinking, its an m37 mount for the Asahiflex bodies.

The 58/2 isn't an Auto-Tak.

Asahiflex has posted some example from his copy of the m42 version in this very thread a bunch of pages back.
The 83 says M42, and the 58 says Auto Tak.

I think.

A kit lens that in my opinion should still be offered as a kit lens.

Welcome to our happy little family.

The funny part was, I was running around the neighbourhood at 545 in my pyjamas and sandals trying to get some shots of the sun, because the clouds came in very quickly and I didnt think I got anything worthwhile until I uploaded them into the PC

What a great little lens , and I got it for 20 dollars!

Welcome to the club. It's taken some time for me to realise that these lenses are not perfectly suited to digital, but that isn't to say you can't walk away with many a fine capture.

Pardon me for asking, but why not?

Here's the 83. Maybe you're right. The guy isn't sure:

ASAHI OPT. CO. 83mm 1:1.9 TAKUMAR Lens M42 Case Vintage - eBay (item 160457208047 end time Jul-23-10 16:13:56 PDT)

And you're right about the other--it's a 55, not 58.

Actually, I believe that 83 is the m42 model. The silver aperture ring on the black version of the m37 is different. Plus the serial # is in the middle of about 10 #'s I have for the m42 version. As far as the 58, goes, that was easy because there never was an Auto Tak in the FL. The 2 m42 Taks in 58mm were the f2 and f2.4 presets and were completely different optical formulae.

So, after work I got home and attached the adapter and fired a couple of test shots with my first Takumar. Boy oh boy, this manually focusing is gonna take practice

First one in focus after a couple of tries:

S-M-C Takumar 55mm f/1.8 - @f/2.8

The lens seems great, but also a new experience. Btw is there anyway of knowing when the lens has been screwed in firmly enough? I am thinking it must impact focusing if not properly attached.

You gotta be kidding:

That is freaking GORGEOUS!!!

And just turn it until it's tight and the F stops are up at 12 o'clock, more or less. Other M42s, not Taks, may position themselves at weird spots--9 o'clock or 3 o'clock--but they still work fine. They're just a little sidewise.

This is particularly true if you don't have the original Pentax adapter.
