I've always considered it a privilege to be able to live comfortably in an environment which is otherwise so harsh and unforgiving. I know lot of people who don't see it as a privilege at all
As for lighting, it's generally good in Alaska late in the year. During the winter months sunrise and sunset come at reasonable hours (i.e. 9am and 4pm) and during the few hours of daylight the sunlight is always angled at a steep slant. In the summer the sun is out all the time. You have to be out at odd hours to get "not-harsh" lighting. As for snow pictures, well, I get lots of opportunity to practice- not much else to do!
