Here is an interesting link: Bernard Cahier used leicas in the 50s but in the early 60s he switched to Pentax and the Takumar lens series, mostly because they had a 200/4 prime

Some of my favorites of December were taken with my Super-Tak 50/1.4:

SMC Takumar 200mm f/4, shot between f/5.8 and f/8. I have bought this lens in August, found out it had fungus and since I had absolutely no money left, decided to clean it myself. Turned out to be a 2-month long experience, and I didn't reassemble it perfectly (can still spot some dust between elements), but I really learned a lot about lens care.
I decided to reply after I saw the response to this which also mentioned your 50/1.4 question.

Your 50/1.4 image looks good at full frame, and could be just a matter of exact focus, which is hard to see in the view finder. Alternatively, one of the groups might not have been nipped up firm on reassembly, or there could be an issue with the infinity setting on the focus ring. Others give instructions for how to fix that.

I had to open my 55/2 (similar construction to the 50/1.4) and judged it to be well engineered - almost impossible to reassemble wrongly, except for the focus ring setting (which I did not need to touch).

I have the SMC 200, which I had to repair. I put a post about the reflection absorbing tube near the back end, including an image of what happens when it falls out. The dust inside is likely only to impact images into the light - increasing flare like effects and possibly reducing contrast, but not visible specific defects in images, since a lens cannot focus on its internal surfaces.

I tried taking image of the moon last night with the 200, but had it at f4 and set the Av exposure on -2.0. The result was not sharable.

In my opinion the nicest STak to use is the 135/3.5 (after using 6 - including the SMC 200 and ATak 35/3.5.) I share an image of a speaker at a conference under available light (spotlights) in a large dark hall. STak135@3.5, 1/10sec, ISO1600. Only cropped, no other processing, K100SD.

Tim, for the night shot, try using manual mode , its a lot more accurate than relying on the +/- EV IMO f4 ISO 400 about 1/250th is a good starting point I find , depends on the stage of the moon of course

For moon shots you can use the "Moony 11" rule, which works exactly like the "Sunny 16" rule.

For a full moon: shutter at 1/ISO, f11
Half moon: f8
Quarter moon: f5.6
Etc.

So a full moon at ISO400 would be shutter speed 1/400 (or thereabouts ) and f11.

Dude163, Mike, thank you for your advice about getting the moon. It is not something that I normally try to capture. I should try my diffenret lenses on this to see what happens. The different focal lengths will produce different frame fills which would give quite different impressions. It might even be interesting to try the Rubinar 1000/10 on this - even if not for this thread.
Despite my failure with the moon pictures last night I have had a really productive NYE and NYDay this year. Most are pictures of friends taken under very dim conditions - so wide open apertures and slightly elevated ISO (800). Today I went driving - to Morgan (South Australia). The weather was clear sky, >41C (106F) and dry. Definitely a day for the polariser. I am pleased with most of what I got on first look. This is part of a long-term project to document the landscape of my home state in response to various weather conditions. When I started we were late in a severe multiyear drought, last year we had floods and this year is normal. The contrast in the scenery is wonderful to see. Tomorrow to Mt Gambier and maybe to Broken Hill the next day. Broken Hill looks a lot like Chloride, AZ - where I met the old man who had gunfights with his friend to keep alive the traditions of the old west! I really enjoy the Tak primes for all these tasks. IK also like the mental disciploine imposed by using primes. That is artistically good for me.

Thank you for your responses, they were actually instructive. I'm lazy now to disassemble the lens just to check if it's properly aligned - especially since it already gives pretty satisfying results. Actually, out of all our lenses, me and my girlfriend actually find ourselves using the 50mm ones the most!

The captions read "How I see myself" and "How others see me".

Nice picture, this type of scenery my GF is also able to pull out of her M50/1.7, but her 100% crops are sharper than mine, hence my original question in this thread

and 100% crop

Almost looks like you are underexposing and recovering it or something.. with no EXIF data to see what ISO etc you shot at it's just a guess.

Yes, that is indeed true. Does it look bad? Actually not "underexpose" but "expose for the sky" as it was far brighter than the mountains.
