Do you know what it is? I have not seen an ant like it before.

How close were you with the 50/4 macro?

I prefer the second. The first one, which is at a nicer angle does not have quite so good illumination and the out of focus coating on the wood is distracting to me.

I'm guessing it was some variety of bee or fly. It had a yellow stripe on its' wings that isn't very obvious in the pic. I'll find a pic that gives a better view of the wings. I was able to get pretty close...probably around 4 inches or so.

I prefer the second of these two new ones. It does look more like a fly than a bee or wasp.

Here's one from last night with the Super Takumar 20mm/4.5. Meanwhile I've been trying to get hold of a Takumar 24mm for nearly two years now, but they rarely come up for sale here in the UK. I've finally bought one from the USA that should arrive this week, and I'm almost deranged with excitement. Or maybe just deranged.

A very evocative photo. Well done. I wonder though, is it dawn or sunset? You mentioned in an earlier post that you have an interest in these crosses and were waiting for better light to photograph them. Could you, perhaps, tell us something about them? I hope to see more of these pictures.

Very nice you got the 24. I got my 28 then 24 and then 20. I have not used the 24 much. Once I got the 20 it got me quite excited about WA. The 20 has some barrel distortion, but that is part of the attraction to it. Sadly the 28 is waiting for me to do some repairs (probably quite minor) but in need of time from me, since it felt in danger of having the front metalwork come off.

Living in Australia the market is so small I instantly realised I would only be able to buy by looking internationally. I got my 24 from someone in UK about 2 years ago.

Yep, there's barrel distortion and soft edges on film even stopped right down, but that Takumar 20mm can do things with colour and light that'll make me forgive it anything. It's a wondrous lens for the things I really care about.

35mm was always my favourite focal length on film -- in fact for ten years in the 90s my only camera was an Olympus XA with its fixed 35mm/2.8. So I’ve been looking for the perfect 24mm as an equivalent ever since I got my first DSLR two years ago. Here’s hoping the SMC Takumar 24mm/3.5 will finally end the quest.

Thanks to Jean Poitiers and Andrew_Oid for the kind comments. To Andrew: the granite crosses on Dartmoor were erected during the medieval period as waymarkers along the routes between various monastries. My own interest in them is really just for the satisfaction of navigating my way to ones I’ve never seen before (using a good old map and compass without any GPS cheating). I’ve now realised that photographing them all is a lifetime’s project, but I’m enjoying the journey.

I bought my 20/4.5 through eBay. I had seen one offered, stating USD200. I traveled to US for a 3 day meeting at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, about a year ago. Then on the last night, before flying out to Taipei I stayed at a little hotel near the Newark airport. I put on a bid a short time before closing and got it as the only bidder. It turned out to be a nice sample. While the auction ended I was talking to my former boss who was visiting MIT at the time.
