Many thanks. It was great early morning light. And thanks everyone else for your likes for the bee.

Here's another by the Macro Takumar 50/4, a lens I highly recommend for its super sharpness, colourfulness and fun. But I've just tried a head-to-head with the Takumar 50/1.4 at f8 and have to say the fast fifty rendered better. But it doesn't do close ups like this!

Super sharpness indeed, nice shot ! I acquired the S-M-C Macro Tak 50/4 just a few weeks ago, by chance. Other than a few early test shots, one of which I posted here, https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/122-lens-clubs/31601-takumar-club-4.html#post2827208I, I haven't had the time to shot with it again, yet. But I, as well, am impressed with its sharpness and can second your recommendation.

Auto-Takumar 55 1.8

We took a little road trip in Southern BC last week. I decided to take a few Takumar lenses with me.

These were taken on the Kettle River near Rock Creek. The trestle is on a trail that follows the old Kettle Valley railroad.

I am on the lookout for the Takumar 50mm f/1.4 either the 7-element or the 8 element version. I know that the 8-element is special. I recently got one from Japan and I had to return it right away because of loose focusing ring. My beat up 8-element copy was not as good as my 55mm f/1.8. I might have gotten one that was in bad shape. Is the 7-element version of 50mm f/1.4 worth getting? Can someone share their experience why the 8-element is so much more sought after? What makes it so special and why is the frequent yellowing on the 8-element not a concern?

Cheers,
Hin

The 8-element does not yellow since it doesn't contain the thoriated element. It's the 7-element tak that tends to yellow.
I think most owners (myself included) would be unable to satisfactorily explain why they find it special. A few years ago, I evaluated both for a few months before shelving the 7-element. There was just something about the images from the 8-element that made me smile...and still does.

Hi Hin;
I have the 8 element and is good. I do not see much difference in the results. However, from time to times, I do notice a really nice tri-dimensionality in the photos taken with the 8 element lens.

Thanks for you inputs. Knowledge is powerful. I was confused about the yellowing. The information in the web is everywhere and some can be misleading. Some ebay seller even claim the goodness of the yellowing glass.

I will try to get an 8-element version for the 50mm f/1.4 when the right timing comes. And my 2nd choice is to get the A 50mm f/1.4 which can be cheaper and when used on the Pentax body, it is nice to have recording of the exif. I have a love bite with almost all of the Takumar lenses. Those slower lenses in the 28 f/3.5 and 35mm f/3.5 are so good that I think those are really good underrated gems to have in one's possession. Too bad the 24mm f/3.5 is priced much higher; otherwise, I would have gotten one.

Cheers,
Hin
