$75 sounds more than reasonable for a lens as good as the 35mm/3.5. If pure quality was what mattered, it would cost ten times that much.

I was driving along minding my own business today when I saw this and just had to stop. Shot with the Samsung GX-10 (K10D clone) and the aforementioned 35mm/3.5.

Nice picture, Dave! Not everyone would recognize the aesthetic qualities of such a scene. ^^ Are you still doing your studies of historical artifacts on the moor?

Thanks Andrew. As for the history thing, I've become obsessed by the story of the American prisoners of war held at Dartmoor Prison (about three miles away from me) during the War of 1812. It was sort of the American Revolution Part 2, and around 2,500 American prisoners were held at Dartmoor under horrific conditions. Hundreds died of disease and starvation, and the whole thing ended with British guards opening fire on the prisoners and committing a massacre.

I was born in England but grew up in New York and Arizona and now live in England again, so my sympathies are very much with the American prisoners. In my spare time I'm working on a book about the events leading up to the massacre.

Dartmoor Prison

That sounds like a very interesting project. The fate of prisoners in the War of 1812 and the massacre at Dartmoor are certainly things I was unfamiliar with. I believe they're still using that prison for some of the more notorious guests of HM government. Am I right? If so, it must be in an isolated location. I hope it's been renovated a couple of times since 1812.

There's a Takumar 58mm f2 lens on eBay at the moment. Last I looked the bid was around $75.
I followed the bidding on this lens...its #1 on my two A4 pages LBA wish list. It sold for $287 (to someone else )

Anyway, I'll just have to make-do with my 'new' early Takumar 50/1.4; a fabulous lens at all distances and all stops....the one that flew away....

The $75 bid was mine. You have that 55mm f2.2 also which seems a rather special lens judging by your photo of the bicycle tire that you posted here a short time ago. I would be interested in a comparison of the Takumar 58mm f2 and the Soviet Helios 44 which is also 58mm f2. That lens also has a lot of admirers. Google doesn't reveal any comparisons though.

8 element 50mm tak on 5D.

Super-Takumar 28 3.5 on 5D. Impressive sharpness even at 100% at short distances.

Lot of nice photos on this page. That early Tak 28 is a pretty good lens FF after all!

Have you seen this?

It makes me made when you see people modifying takumar glass and trying to sell it for more on ebay.. RARE !! Asahi Super-Takumar Zebra 24 mm F/3.5 Pentax Manual Focus Lens M42

---------- Post added 09-07-2014 at 02:49 PM ----------

Also took a chance and bought a S-M-C Fish Eye Takumar 17mm f4 from a seller who did not know much about lenses and said buy at own risk.. and it is perfect! So stoked! picked it up for $150. WOOT! I've been wanting a multi coated one but they are hard to come by in the 17mm fish eye. Ill have to take it on my trip to see the Red Woods in Cali next week.. I am just super stoked to own the widest takumar they made!

I really would be interested to see what the pictures from the 17 on APS-C look like. I am curious whether they have the feel of fish eye or a wide angle with barrel distortion. I have the 20 which distorts a bit, but I find that pleasing.

BTW: there was SMC Tak 15 rectilinear - very rare and very expensive s/h now. (Out of my price range.)

Very long time since I saw any posts from Mike Cash in Takumar club, I really liked his photos. Anyone knows if I can find photos by him anywhere else?

That's a great find! The 17mm has been top of my lens wish list for a couple of years now, but I haven't found one yet in good condition at a price I can afford. A local camera shop has a near-mint example for sale, but they're asking £399GBP, which is twice the price I'm willing to pay. I think they're basing their price on the ridiculously high "buy it now" prices online, and ignoring the fact that when the 17mm occasionally comes up for auction in this country it usually sells for £150-£200.

As a stop-gap, I've recently bought a Zenitar 16mm. It's okay, but it's no Takumar. Defished using PT Lens, the Zenitar on APS-C has the same field of view as my Takumar 20mm on film -- so equivalent to about a 14mm rectilinear on digital.

I'm seething with jealousy, but still looking forward to seeing some shots from your 17mm.

EDIT: I think Leadguitartist is right that the 17mm is the widest Takumar. The fisheye projection means that the 17mm actually has a wider field of view than the 15mm rectilinear.
