Thanks Ray. That one was shot with all six megapixels of the *ist DL2, which is a little camera that I've been having a lot of fun with since I picked one up for a giveaway price a few weeks ago (£45).

But today I finally got around to shooting some straight head-to-head shots with the *ist vs the K-S1 to decide which one I'll be carrying as my second camera long-term, and to my surprise I preferred the results from the K-S1. So the *ist will be living in the car from now on, which is what I'd originally planned for it anyway, for those times when I'm driving along and see something that makes me wish I had a camera with me. And the K-S1 will be going in the bag as backup to the GX-10.

It looks like the arch CMOS hater might have finally started to succumb.
I checked out the full size image on Flickr and it is still pretty good for 6MP. Those older cameras can still deliver the goods.

Don't feel bad. You are not the first and you won't be the last. We are fortunate to be able to have a foot in each camp.

It isn't much discussed these days but I think the CMOS sensors have improved over the last few years not just in their high ISO and resolution, but also in their colour output when compared to the older CCDs.

K-30, SMC Takumar 55mm f1.8, Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta 2017

I haven't been using this lens as much as I should, but it's nice to take it out for a walk here and again. At the fiesta it made a nice lightweight compliment to my Sigma 10-20 for longer shots and turned out to be about all I needed for reach.

For most of the photos I take, most of the sizes I print out, and most of the resolution I view at, a 6MP CCD sensor fed lots of light offers very few if any disappointments. There was, after all, a time when that was the best there was.

Note however that caveat: fed lots of light. Like phonecams, I find the results get exponentially worse as the light levels drop and the ISO necessarily increases for the same shutter speed (though the *ist-series' sensor is still far better in this respect than any phonecam I have ever used).

Oh yes, that is so and will always be the case because of the massive actual size difference between a phone sensor and an APS-C sensor and the size of the pixels when they put more pixels on a phone sensor than there are on a 6MP APS-C. There are situations where size does matter.

There may come a day when superior signal processing plus physical sensor properties close the gap between 2003-vintage sensors and whenever. But all else being the same (or reasonably similar), yes.

I completely agree. At 1920x1080 on my monitor, and at the print sizes I usually make, the effect of the resolution difference between 6MP and 20MP is negligible. The real surprise for me in comparing the *ist DL2 against the K-S1 is that it was the first time I've ever preferred the colour rendering of a CMOS sensor over a CCD.

Of course, that has a lot to with the fact that I'm now using BigMackCam's CCD emulation preset with the K-S1, which has transformed it from a camera that I hated using into one that is now welcome in my bag.

I won't use Lightroom because I don't like the rental system that keeps you hostage to whatever they want to charge.

I don't use Lightroom either for the same reason. I've converted BigMackCam's preset into a camera raw profile that I use with Photoshop Elements. I assume that Adobe won't suddenly expect me to start paying a monthly fee for the same version of Elements that I've been using for years. . . but you never know with Adobe.

The 17mm fisheye is very prone to flare, but that's fine by me because I like flare. After all, if I'd wanted an ultra-clean flare-free modern look then I wouldn't have used a 50 year old lens.
