As promised above, I have taken a couple of quick shots with the SMC Tak 200/f4 on my K10D. I have not tried it yet on a full-frame camera but I think it did pretty well on a crop sensor.
JPGs processed with ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate.
Lovely shots - with those Pentax/Takumar reds and rendering, and I particularly like the in-and-out of focus subtleties of the second photo.

There's no doubt the Tak 200/4 is a fine lens, especially for the kind of compositions you've show here. It can produce images with great pop (here's one below on a K-3). My problem with the lens on crop sensors related to using it as a walk around, hand-held telephoto lens, for taking photos of wild-life in parks. The equivalent of 300mm on crop, plus more sensitive digital sensors, resulted in a large proportion of blurred images, even with Pentax's SR. It really needed a tripod to stabilise the set-up. Now the lens is back to the natural 200mm on FF, I'm finding more keepers.

Super-Multi-Coated Macro-Takumar 100 4

I recently picked up a second copy of this lens while purchasing a bag of stuff containing a target item.

It has been a little cool around here but clear which is great as it has been probably one of the longest wet and grey period of weather in quite a long time.

I shot these with the K5 I picked up last summer. Between the camera and the lens very nice colours and exposure.

Had the great idea to attach my Takumar 200mm f/3.5 to a 27.5cm extension tube. Pretty happy with the results so far. Looking forward to trying it out on people (my wife wasn't interested, lol!)

Were those fires to keep the farmers warm.

Yep, I think some sheep farmers decided it was a good day to have a nice warm fire, and while they were at it they could clear some gorse for better grazing too. Or maybe they'd read George Monbiot's column in the Guardian yesterday demanding an end to such outdated slash-and-burn methods, and wanted to lodge a protest. Not too many Guardian readers among the olde worlde Dartmoor farmer types though.

We're due for snow today, so I'm thinking that the black of the freshly burnt gorse against the white of the snow might make for some interesting photos. And the ponies tend to be drawn to the burnt gorse, which makes me wonder whether they just like the flavour or if there's some real nutritional benefit for them in eating it.

I notice the farmers in Oxfordshire seem very primitive compared with Australia. They still use lots of burning off, and ploughing to fallow. Those things went out in Australia for most of my adult life. I remember the direct drilling sowing arguments in the late 70s and early 80s. Afterwards, much less problem with soil erosion, flood run-off and dust storms. Often when I go to work I find farmer's smoke is almost choking.

Depends where you are in Australia - we still have sugar cane fields being burned off prior to harvest in the north of Queensland and lots of fires are lit and allowed to burn uncontrolled through open bushland in Far North Queensland as some kind of conservation method...

Love the pic of the little horse though - looks cold despite the sunny vista.
