It is a beaut. Thanks for the info, Ray. Tried a few shots myself this evening with a Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 150mm f/4 and the #3 (28.5mm) extension tube. Wasn't quite in macro territory, and found it a little tricky to nail the focus with the stock matte screen, but overall it went OK. It's something I will experiment with further.

In the US, $3.00 for the lowest grade is historically, fairly high. But compared to the rest of the world, we have cheap gas.

I was thinking at those cheap prices it must have been shandied with some rancid food oil, just poured in without further treatment, as a way to get rid of the rancid food oil without paying for disposal.

The neighbours across the street from where I used to live had a lot of them in the front yard. They sold it to some people from China (Mainland) who were quite proud of the fact that their home town was the place Chiang Kai Shek came from. And their food was a bit like salt with some food added. We found It almost inedible when they gave us some.

Another one with the Super-Multi-Coated Takumar 150mm f/4 and #3 (28.5mm) extension tube (at f/5.6, I believe)

Wow, looks like you discovered another winner! These old Tak's seem to do well at close distances with an extension tube. As you say, perhaps not true macro, but for close focus work like this, it sure is quite good and very sharp.
Well done.

Thanks for the encouraging comment, Eric. Yes, I was pleasantly surprised at what could be achieved with this lens/extension tube combo. I purchased a set of original Asahi/Pentax M42 rings last year but never really had an opportunity to give them a proper workout until now when your recent posts intrigued and challenged me. As I mentioned previously, it was a struggle to achieve accurate focus with a lot of the shots. Couple that with the fact that my dedicated M42 camera is an old K-m which gets better results at lower sensitivities (<400) so I was dealing with relatively slow shutter speeds. I did find using a monopod helped; not only to steady my hands but to be able to pivot the camera back and forth on the leg to fine tune the focus. I will definitely spend some more time playing around with these rings in the future and try them on a few of my other longer-focal-length Taks like the 135 & 200. Great fun!

Here are a couple more from the 150mm and #3 ring combo:

Wow, you are doing great! Yes, focus is tricky even with the K-1, but it does help me with the big viewfinder and CIF (leave AF turned On, then set min focus distance you want, then lean in... sloooowly, heh.)
None of these are flash, though I do have a soft bonnet for my AF360 for fill flash I use at times for macro with my DFA100WR, but prefer natural light if I can get away with it. All handheld.

CIF works great with something like a reversed 50 or 28 as well. As long as you can accept a focus distance equal to the registration distance of Pentax and you are capable of moving rrreeeaaallllllllyyyyy slowly.

I like it. That lens is a good one, and somewhat rarer than others, like the 135/3.5 and 200/4.

Cheers, Tim. Up until now, I've used that lens for portraits mainly. Slapping on an extension tube has opened up a whole new realm of possibilities for me.

Sharpness and color. Lots of post-processing, but if it isn't in the image, no amount of post will get it out. Modern digital bodies are wonderful for recording the light that sterling old lenses transmit. Microprocessors and code extract the best that the recorded image has to offer. But first the photographer has to see it. Fujifilm X-T20, Super Takumar 35mm f/3.5 at f/8, 1/20s, ISO 800.
