Finally got my hands on a SMC Takumar 85mm 1.8 complete with hood and case. Cosmetically a bit worn but optically excellent.
This lens is super sharp, has 3D pop and great colors.
This is one I shot early yesterday morning when the moon was still large:
I like how sharp everything is in this pic and the stream rising.

Thank you, Albert and Ray, for your kind comments.

ABW, that's beautiful rendering from your 85mm, and I agree with you about the way the steam looks. I've always felt that the way a lens handles things like steam and mist is one of the measures of a truly great one. It's kind of ironic that the subjects that take the best real sharpness and resolution to depict well are the ones with the softest, least defined edges.

Does anyone here happen to have any shots taken with the 300mm/6.3 that they can share? I don't need a lens that long very often, so on my present meagre photography budget I don't feel that I can justify the 300m/4.0, but I'd really like to get a Takumar rather than the hopeless F100-300mm that I've been using so far. I've had a look in the reviews section, and fortunately there are a couple of reviews there from forum members whose abilities I trust, so I think the 300mm/6.3 might do the job for me.

Thanks for the nice words.

Here are some shots with the trusty SMC Takumar 200mm f4 (with hood).
These were shot on a crappy tripod with the A7III.
I like this lens for its reach, relative sharpness, bokeh and color rendering - and its also a work of art.
Mostly the ISO is 6400 with fast exposure times except the Statute of Liberty shot which is 30 seconds and ISO 200.
I'm pretty sure these are all shot at around f16.

Those 55/1.8 Takumars have a character that I love. My SMC Takumar renders similarly. Nice shooting, farmer.

Is that the Tele Takumar version you are referring to? - here is a SOC shot taken on the K20D, resized only:

Thanks, I think you've convinced me with that one shot that it's exactly the lens I want. Beautiful rendering.

I have both the 300/6.3 and the much later 300/4.

My preference is the 300/4 because I seem to be able to get it to focus more easily. Although I should get it out again to see if the problem before was my sight, which seems to have improved a bit. First when I came to England I was less stressed and I could focus the MF lenses easier, and more recently a change of diet seems to have resulted in much less difficulty with car headlights dazzling me.

Thanks Tim. The F100-300mm that I've been using is f/5.6 at 300mm and I've been able to manually focus it fine (and certainly more accurately than autofocus manages). So I'm hoping that the extra half stop to f/6.3 won't be a problem with the Tak. I'd certainly go for the f/4 version if one happens to turn up at a bargain price -- maybe a fungus infected one that I can buy cheap and clean up. But the f/4 seems to usually go for about three times the price of the f6.3, and at the moment that's a major factor for me.

But who knows, maybe in a few months my health will have picked up again and I'll have more cash coming in to feed my photography addiction.

That price differential seems about right.

My 300/4 was missing the auto/manual switch. I pulled the baffle of the back and inserted a copper piece to hold the pin 'in' and put the baffle back on. That enables changing the aperture.
