Interesting points on the reviews. I read them to try to avoid any really awful lenses but am far more likely to be influenced by other people's shots.

Here's a positive review for the SMC Takumar 50\1.4.

Any issues are down to me and not the lens...

It's hard to go wrong with a 50/1.4. I can see no issues with either the lens or the photographer. Very nice image.

Some reviewers discredit themselves, the sad thing is that they still affect the point totals and averages.

The one that makes me laugh, is the reviewer who buys a manual focus lens, and in reviewing it marks it lower in Handling for not be autofocus, something it never was meant to be. It amazes me how often that comes up in reviews. Could we have those reviewers each face a mirror and give themselves a nice hard Dopeslap?
Don't forget those who complain that the lens they bought isn't wide enough. It's terrible design, making a 28mm lens that doesn't have an 18mm field of view.

When a set of reviews has some people giving a lens a 9 for sharpness, at the same time some other people are giving it a 5, it does take some careful reading and questioning.
-- Do these people have equivalent copies of the lens, but very very different standards?
-- Do both factions post sample images, and did the people posting 5s post sharp pix for some other lenses (meaning they just don't need new eye glasses)?
-- If both kinds of reviewers are being accurate, do others have to seriously worry about a great quality variation among copies of that lens when they shop for one?

If there is a big swing in quality between copies, it is a good thing if the reviews warn us about it.

How far I trust any review is entirely down to whether there are sample photos included, and how good they are. It's only when I've seen photos taken by a photographer that I can decide whether or not I care about his or her opinion. And I'd expect other people to have the same attitude towards trusting or not trusting my own opinions as well.

I'm happy to say that I know I can trust the opinions of everyone here in the Takumar Club, because everyone here has backed their words up with pictures.

I have only put a few in PF but almost all have been with Taks. And you might not agree with my reviews.

The Church of St Michael & All Angels in Princetown, near the infamous Dartmoor Prison. The church was built by French and American prisoners of war held in appalling conditions during the Napoleonic wars and the War of 1812. The silhouette is a life-sized World War I memorial. In all these years I've never taken a single photo of the prison, but perhaps it's time I did that.

(With the 17mm and defished.)

Interesting to silhouette the memorial in the classic memorial pose against the coloured church.

There are two of them on either side of the church gate, just black metal silhouettes that have quite an eerie effect. And inside the church there's a transparent one that tends to make people think they've seen a ghost when they first walk in.

That is a great series, Ed. Especially the last one. Very interesting.
I don't have the SMC version but I do have the Super-Takumar version and I am very happy with it.

Thanks Ed, it's one of my favorites too. Not a bokeh monster by any means, but there's something about the rendering. Very natural and precise is how I would describe it. I use a generic "standard" screw-in metal hood. Nice images from you as well!

Another from early March with the Super Tak 35/3.5 on K10D:
