Great picture, and now I've learned a new word and atmospheric phenomenon!

Last time I went to Barret-Jackson, I took only an SMC Takumar 55/1.8. I think it's a seriously under-valued lens. I like the rendering even better than the 50/1.4, and it costs a third as much.

It's a little tricky using a not-wide lens at a very busy car show, but it forces some unusual perspectives that I wouldn't otherwise think of.

The 55mm f/1.8 (& f/2) is a very nice lens indeed, I think it's better than the 50/1.4 and much, much better value. I was using mine just yesterday on a Spotmatic.

I especially like the rendering in the third shot down.

It does seem to give a little something extra. My favorite (and most used) lens ever is the 50mm f/1.2. I confess I did buy it for the f/1.2, but kept using it for the rendering between f/1.4 and f/2.8. It's the perfect combination of smooth and sharp, and the colors are always easy to work with in post. While light compared to other lenses of the same aperture, it's still kinda big and heavy, not to mention expensive.

Of all the fast 50's I've used, the Tak 55/1.8 comes the closest to it in rendering and color, and it does it while being ergonomically perfect, and dirt cheap.

After the auction, I took the Tak 55 as one of two lenses on a road trip to Oregon. No regrets on not bringing more lenses. All these are with the Takumar.

Okay, okay. Now that I've recovered, the 50/1.2 you refer to is the SMC-M version, yes?

Thanks. My 50/1.2 is the A version, but from what I've read, the optics are identical.

That's funny! My dad liked mine so much, he wanted one of his own after I visited with it. So, I found him a good used one down here, bright red, and drove it back up to him in Oregon. I just remembered I used the Takumar for that trip, too! I took the back-roads through the Mojave, then headed up 395.

Same day, 7,000 feet higher. Gotta love California!

This was two years ago. My dad still has his, but I don't have my blue one anymore. I just couldn't get used to the weird throttle response. I've never had so much trouble driving a stick (my dad's is an automatic). I have a Mirage now, also blue. I like little cars.
