A shot from today with the K-1, S-M-C-Tak 20/4.5 (testing out the new hood), the Lowry Theatre in Salford Quays.

The Brixham lifeboat in its floating dock. With the 24mm. A wonderful lens that I use all the time, but not usually for the sort of photos that I post here.

I love the colours you've captured, the S-M-C-Tak 24 is new to me, I'm trying to get a handle on how it performs. My example is showing very little (hardly any) noticeable distortion and a very obvious fall-off towards the extreme corners of the full frame (it really is the extreme corners where it comes in quickly, but it's not something I'm worried about).

Thank you. I haven't used the 24mm on FF digital, but on film I think it really needs stopping down to at least f/8 to get good corners -- which makes perfect sense as it was designed as a very wide angle for its time and was always intended to be used stopped down. On APS-C, it makes a great "wide normal" that I'm happy to shoot wide open and often do. Its colour and contrast rendering is quite different to the 20mm and 28mm Taks that I've used, with the 24mm being cooler and more analytical than the more romantic look that I get from the other two. It's one of the mightiest of the Taks, and I wouldn't want to be without mine.

Ah, Dave, I just love the way you describe how lenses work. I don't have a 20mm but I do have a 24mm and a 28mm and their images do have a different feel but I could never have described it the way you do. You get my award as "Master Wordsmith". Thank you. My 24mm and 28mm lenses mean a lot to me because of the story behind each one of them.

I bought one of the 24mm's in 2014, but only used it briefly before putting it on the shelf. The rendering never really pleased me. Dave described it really well. It's technically just fine, but it's too clinical for my taste. Of course it can take great pictures, but it just shoots what you point it at without adding any special character. I know many people prefer lenses that way (one person's "character" is another person's "flaw"), but not me. It's the reason why I don't use modern lenses, which tend to be technically excellent, but artistically dull.

This was my favorite picture I took in the brief time I used the lens, of my cool uncle driving us through the desert in his jeep.

My copy also has a loose front element. It doesn't seem to affect the pictures, but the glass front element wobbles if you hit it with a blower. I can't figure out why. Everything is tight, as far as I can tell, and the lens shows no sign of ever being disassembled, but it's like there's a shim missing somewhere. Anyone else have that issue?

Thanks folks. Writing has always been my first love, and it means a lot to me that you've said such kind things.

Have you removed the name ring and checked that the front element group is screwed in tight? My 20mm has a tendency for the front group to come slightly loose, and no matter what I do I always end up having to tighten it up again about once a year. It's only a five minute job, and I've started to think of it as pretty much just routine maintenance.

Thanks, need to look at that in relation to other Taks I have.

I don't think I've posted this before, I have a Super-Tak 55mm f/1.8 with the aperture ring running in the 'wrong' direction, there seems to be quite a few variants of these Auto/Super lenses in the reviews:

K-1 + Super-Tak 55/1.8 @ f/4. None of my other 50s have the beautiful bokeh transition of this old Tak.
