Thanks kuuan, ingenious and useful! While googling, i arrived at your flickr smct 105mm 2.8 set, im pretty much satisfied with the colours and sharpness because mine just arrived today at my doorstep!

I'm out in Halifax for a couple of weeks with work....what a great city! I haven't had much of a chance to sneak out for taking very many pics, but I have some time yet. Here is one from yesterday....I don't have PP with me so I have done what I can....

Pentax K7, SMC Takumar 85/1.8
Nice capture, wish u could show us more of the city if u have the time. This is the kind of lens which i could only dream of, its either too rare or too expensive

haha eselite, actually I have been using mostly the preset Takumar f2.8/105mm because I like it's somewhat smaller size and the handling of the preset, and it performs very well too!

edit: and thinking about it, it is Mike Cash who has been taking many great photos with this lens which can be seen here in this thread and also on his flickr site!

I will say nothing about the older preset Takumars, or early Supers vs. the SMC's, for monetary reasons: do we really want to have the prices escalate for the older glass before we've accumulated our fill?

I won't say, for example, that my experience with other focal lengths agrees with the above, and I won't say that some other Tak afficionados may - with complete deniability - agree also.

I will say however that ever since I've owned an ES-II I have coveted the SMC's and S-M-C's. And the Tx Vivitars and the Adaptalls, as I have an ES compatible mount for each.

Awww, I'm kidding, sort of, it's good to get the true info out. Besides, I'm still planning my Auto vs. SMC 55/1.8 comparison, with and without hoods, to see what a real world SMC effect is. (You might want to try this too - shoot the same thing with the sun obliquely on the front element; in theory better coating will give a more contrasty image, and a hood will do so even more.)

With any old lens, the genetical variation (i.e. design + original build) get swamped by life experience... And sometimes it's not the externally mint samples that are best optically. This is especially true in the Nikon tribe, where the culture was: let the equipment knock aganst the world, it's tough, that's why, it's supposed to be that way! As a result, if a Nikkor sample wasn't up to snuff, it wasn't used so much, and therefore not dinged. But a well dinged Nikkor saw lots of use (and one hopes because the photographer saw something in it!)

my reason for going SMC line is because i'm able to use open aperture metering on my spotmatic f.

laugh The adpatalls, Tx Vivs, and adaptamatics are the best kept secretes for use with the ES, ES II and Spot F (and Elecro Spot if someone has one that works). I concur about prices surging on all flavors of Taks. A good example is all versions of the 85mm from the auto-tak to the SMC f1.8 version. They have been going for more than I'm willing to pay for the last 2 years. Heck, I finally went with the FA 77mm for use on my film and digital k bodies. Officially, I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with anything in this thread.

It's certain than the particular copy of one lens can vary from one to other, but in the casus of the pre-set 105 I don't think that this occur.

I have to say that thinking the preset version is one of the best 105 takumars, is not a descovery. Some members of differents forums beleave that, at least that the SMC and the pre-set are very similar and have the best rendering.

The andreas job is one of the best in 105 lenses. Very clear. The images speack by themselves. And it's a serious support of that thought.

Then, I will go out to find a cheap and good pre-set version.

Rino.

I am pretty sure there is an 85mm f/1.8 (might be an f/1.9) for sale in the Marketplace at the moment .... I was just browsing through there myself.

They do command the higher price ... but they still work out much cheaper than newer 85s out there ... but the image quality is still amazing from these lenses.

Like Blue and I said: having an SP-F or one of the ES's changes the equation.

I already pruchased my near mint copy of my 85mm f/1.9 from none other than Mr Sherman himself ... along with my 135 f/3.5

Seeing as I have been kinda broke for a little while (wife on maternity leave and without a 2nd job at the moment as well) ... LBA has been hard to deal with ... but i did find a lens I have been looking for, for a little while now.

I have just purchased a Super-Macro-Takumar 50mm f/4.

Looking forward to using this lens when it arrives ... should be fund with some extension tubes ... and maybe a reversing ring as well.
