Soft lenses club --> Show us what you can do with these special lenses!

Hello, I recently acquired a FA 85 mm SOFT and I started to play with it (one example here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/12-post-your-photos/315172-nature-up-tree-squirrel-view.html), but I find it hard to find a good context for it...

I'd like to create a SOFT lens club, i.e. a thread that focuses to see some sample shots made with these soft "special" lenses.

I know we can achieve the same effect with other means, but I'd be more interested to see what those special lenses can do...

You will find a similar thread (https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/10-pentax-slr-lens-discussion/264714-pent...xperience.html) that is more an informative point of view, but after a quick discussion with our admin, it might be relevant to create a separate lens club for showing your photos, so if more people post examples, it may inspire others on their best usage...

This is the list of SOFT lenses I have found in the Lens DB..

Pentax SOFT Lenses

SMC Pentax-F 85mm F2.8 Soft
SMC Pentax 85mm F2.2 Soft
SMC Pentax 67 / SMC Pentax-6x7 120mm F4 Soft
SMC Pentax-FA 28mm F2.8 Soft
SMC Pentax-FA 85mm F2.8 Soft

Third Party SOFT lenses (in Pentax Mount)

Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 70-150mm f/2.8 SOFT (51A)
Tamron Adaptall-2 SP 70-150mm f/2.8 SOFT (51A) Lens Reviews - Tamron Adaptall Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

I haven't done an extensive search, but if you know some others in K mounts, let me know and I'd add them to this list !

Here are a couple shots I have done in recently with the SMC Pentax-FA 85mm F2.8 Soft...

I wonder if the Sears 135mm f2.8 Macro would qualify - the 'macro' isn't really a macro feature, but more of a close-focus.... and gives a well-known blur or softness to the image:

Well, you have a good question...

My initial intentions by creating this lens club were to "promote" those special Pentax or third parties labeled with "SOFT", where the amount of softness is controlled by the aperture ring...

My understanding is that photographers have a love-hate relationship with those SOFT lenses ...
For example, there are also the Lensbaby lenses that can create similar effects, but I dont want to include them, those are also very special! But I am not an expert in that domain...

The Sears lens seem to have the same kind of softness as the "genuine" soft lenses

Well, let's say that for comparison, I would agree to show something like your Sears lens... it may add certainly to the discussion! (I dont want to become control-freak but rather open-minded...)

I'll be using the Sears lens in question for the April Single In Challenge - so hope have some soft-focus shots to share here...

K85 f2.2 at f2.2 on my K30.

stopped down to f5.6 I think

I'm thinking about picking up a F or FA85mm version soon while the prices are low and locating the 28mm version if I can ever find one for a reasonable price.

With the F 85 f2.8, most shots somewhere in the f4 to f5.6 range:

Before I get out my soft lens I'll observe that flowers always seem like the most natural subject for such a lens, by far the most common single subject posted so far.

A very good reason to get out with your soft lens and shoot something else!
