Originally posted by Jonathan Mac The Tamron 17-50/2.8 is a great lens - sometimes it makes me wonder why I have all of the DA limiteds....
According to the data here in the forums, the Tamron focuses one centimetre closer than the 16-45, and with the extra 5mm on the telephoto end it should get slight but noticeable higher magnification.
The leaf photo I posted recently was very, very close to minimum focus:

Hmmm the magnification numbers are .26x for the 16-45 and .22x (1:4.5) for the Tamron. I think the MFD doesn't tell the story because it seems to be variable for the Tamron (meaning the MFD is longer at longer FLs). I think the 16-45 is the opposite, for longer FLs the MFD is shorter (result of the funky zoom design). With the 16-45, at 45mm (which is with the barrel not extended - so at its shortest length) I can put a subject at about 1 inch of the front element. It seems that the magnification is more than what the numbers say... (I know the MFD is from the sensor, not the front element, but still!)
Also, the 16-45mm at MFD at 45mm is one of the sharpest lenses I own.
Still, I have LBA for the Tamron, can't help it I guess
