But FF DSLRs are just so huge and heavy that I doubt I would lug such a system around- especially with VR lenses- unless "they" were paying me the big bucks.
Shiner, you got me thinking, so I did a quick search. The D700 ful-frame DSLR weighs in @ 995 grams. My k20d weighs in @ 715 grams. This is surprising if you ask me.

Yeah, Pentax's upper level dslr series is generally quite heavy. Probably because they actually build them out of materials with similar robustness to a FF camera

[edit] I think it's the lenses you're really going to have to watch out for.

What do you mean by "it's the lenses you're really going to have to watch out for"? Can you be more specific? Tx

That is surprising- but the K20d never was particularly small, really. What about the lens bulk/weight differences, I wonder, and how it all adds up as a system? The K-5 weighs in at 670g.

My Tamron 28-75 f 2.8 weighs the same on my K20d (though becomes truly wide) as it would weigh on my Nikon D700--the same holds true with the Sigma 70-200 f 2.8.

However, I'll probably go the prime way in N mount, FF, since the choices are plentiful, & the quality is high. For example, here are some AF, Full Frame Nikkors, all of which have faster counterparts avaliable if you want to spend more money. With these lenses on FF, you get an abundant supply of shallow DOF. and diffraction setting in about a full stop later, giving you more Aperture options=more creative possibilities.

Nikkor D 28mm f2.8 204 grams $390

Nikkor D 35mm f2 204 grams $290

Nikkor D 50mm f 1.8 156 grams $140

Nikkor D 85mm f 1.8 380 grams $489

I still have not ruled out going with a D7000, but it is looking like a long shot at this point. I mainly wanted the extra reach it provides for Macro with its crop factor X. If I go D700, I'll pick up a Sigma 150mmm 2,8 (weighs the same in Dx or Fx mount) otherwise I'll keep my K20d/Tamron 90mm solely for Macro shooting. I still have to research, carefully. I want to make the best possible choice for my situation. 95% of my shooting is landscapes & people, which can easily be done 85mm & under on FF. If I want to shoot a bird or 2, I'll get a Nikon adapter for my Tamron adaptall 60-300mm 23a lens. This lens is very light too.

It looks like you'll come out fine. Guess I was thinking of the huge, expensive, fast Nikor zooms like my nephew has for his business...

Go and scout...see if the place has enough light for a manageable Iso+f2.8 if it doesn't see if there is somewhere you can bounce a flash on..
If you got a post Kx body you should be fine with high iso + f2,8 and some PP work.

The secret?

Go early. Lock in the camera position, focal length, exposure, DOF and WB before the event happens. You'll feel much more confident then. You'll also have time to recover if you've forgotten the batteries and SD card.

If this isn't a pro job, and if it can be done with the EV available, consider burst mode to get a choice of expressions/hands, etc. even if you have to use JPG only. The recipients will be thrilled to have a choice and if just one frame catches a magic moment you'll be a hero.

If you're not havin' fun, you didn't arrive early enough.

Tamron 17-50 SP 2.8

Spring in the mountains of NH, which means, less than a mile upstream, snow melts and runoff makes for ice-cold water.
