Congratulations on getting a fine camera--wish you many thousands of awesome shots. It looks like you took Frogfish's good advice some pages back. Sorry to hear about your 23a--I am still in love with mine and it has never looked so good now that it makes pics on Full frame, where it belongs. Looking forward to seeing some of your shots with your new gear.

JT
Hey, thanks! I must admit, I don't remember what that specific advice was, but I waited until I got a great deal on a used K-5 that had already been checked for sensor stains and other issues. It was sold by a forum member who, if memory serves, is on a FF track similar to yours.

The 23A is a great lens, and I may regret selling it. But at least someone else is discovering it soon!

Well then, perhaps I can jar your memory by reposting this exchange from earlier in the thread, where Mr. FRogfish asked you to get a K5---does this help?:

Do you have any tips for a newbie with a K-x who is interested in nighttime photography like this?

FROGFISH: I would love to be able to offer words of wisdom to aid you but in fact as a relative novice of less than one year myself (though I do admit I am an avaricious reader on photography - spending at the very least 4 or 5 hours a day on forums or reading photography books) I can only say - buy a K5 !

My methods are simplistic in the extreme for these shots, manual exposure and in some cases MF, hyperfocal, and then check your results carefully on the LCD.

There was very little PP on these, 2 mins per photo perhaps; a little cropping, auto curves adjustment, shadow recovery (because with the K5 there is lots of detail that can be recovered in the shadows) and very minor definition and vibrancy boosts. Absolutely no NR.

Sorry - also forgot to mention these were shot in RAW (DNG) which will have had an impact on the DR.

Ah, yes. I do remember this now. It seems so long ago! And you know what, I did go out and do some nighttime photography with my K-x. It worked out quite well. And the K-5 idea became a seed in my mind...

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 and K-5 head to Vegas

Took along my K-5 and new Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 on a business trip to Vegas this past weekend and went out the one evening to get a few shots and find out how well it performed in low-light and night time situations. I've been pretty happy with the lens so far, here are a few of the pics taken. Sorry to the purists, post processing done in CS5:

Nice shots! Makes me pulled back to the 17 - 50. Have been leaning towards the 28-70 for sometime now.

Another with the 17-50 @50mm, cropped. Nicest point source bokeh I've seen from this lens.

These are very nice--thanks for posting. Now that I own a Nikon camera too, I frequent their forums. The 17-50 enjoys a near-cult status there: not so hard to figure out when you see the Nikkor 17-55mm f 2.8 sells in the $1500 range. Nikon forums have entire threads devoted solely to the Tamron 17-50mm.

Many Nikon owners favor the Tamron IQ, though the Nikkor is better built. Keep posting those images.

I am in Tucson visiting my family, and recently went to the Barrio Viejo for the first time, and got some cool photos.
and just a head up....they colors in these photos my be a bit wonky because the laptop I am using here is impossible to tune the colors to how I have them on my own desktop.

Both of these were processed in LR 3.3 and Color Efex Pro - used the Vignette Blur

K-x with Tamron 17-50@ 47.5mm
1/100
f/11
ISO 100

K-x 17-50@ 30mm
1/160
f/11
ISO 100

K-x 17-50@ 38.1 mm
1/200
f/11
ISO 400
EV bias +.3
Edited using only LR3 (this laptop would die if I installed Photoshop CS5 on it)

Thanks! yes, it's hard to argue the build quality on the Nikkor. one of my close friends shoots a D700 & D7000 and has the "holy trinity" of Nikkor lenses, i've used his setup with the 17-55mm f2.8 and it is extremely nice, but worth the $1000+ premium over the Tamron?? that part is up to the user. That lens is also a beast of a piece of glass...pretty heavy. so far i've been happy with my first Tamron purchase, second shooting a wedding this Friday with my Nikonian friend so i'll try to give it a good run during that. i'll post some of the pics if they turn out.

I also bought the sigma 17-50 f/2.8 and it just must not have been a good copy, IQ was lacking and focus was a good bit off...will be returning the Sigma and keeping the Tamron. For the first time in my life, I actually liked the less expensive item!

I like this shot & colors look great on my calibrated CRT monitor.

The holy part of the Nikkor lenses to me is their 5-Year Warranty.

I agree with your assessment of the Tamron over the Sigma: Tamron wins, especially wide open. Who needs image stabilization if you invested already in Pentax bodies? I own Sigma lenses, but prefer the Tamron in this instance.

Nice shots: I love White Birch. I still own this lens in Pentax Mount--love the added reach it provides on Crop sensor. This has to be the bread & buttter of the Tamron lineup, even to this day.

You all are really inspiring me to finally pull the trigger and get the 28-75. I love the wider angle, but want to try the 28-75 because the bulk of my shots are of the kids, and I already have the kit 18-55 that came with my k-x.
