Here is the Ausable again, just a couple of miles down river from the fly-fishing shot above. To get this shot you literally have to perch on the edge of a precipice--a bit nerve wracking for sure. There is a long jagged rock protruding out over the river. I went as near to the edge as I could, (a slip here could be fatal) but still could not eliminate part of the rock on which I platformed from disturbing the shot. Hence the strange rock colors in the bottom right--oh well, I still like the shot.

F10, 1.6 secs. ISO 100, no filters, tri-pod, 17mm

I'm thinking I need to come live on your couch or in your garage so I can follow you around.

post processing

All the shots from this thread were posted straight from RAW to jpeg with no post processing except resize & save.

They were a little lacking in contrast, so I PP'd one to see how they might look if I'd been shooting as I normally do, instead of doing a lens comparison where I really wasn't concerned with composition etc.

Original Tamron 17-50@f/8

PP'd Tamron 17-50@f/8 (cropped to get rid of the bricks)

Cleaned up & sharpened pretty good.

I need to drive about 4 hours to enter Ozark Mountains of South Cnetral Missouri and Northern arkansas. In my younger days I fly fished there but I haven't been recently. You've given me a thought . . .
Ah the legendary (more ways than 1) White River. There's plenty of fishing and photo ops along there.

Yes, I float-tube (aka 'Belly Boat) the North Fork from time to time. If Pentax made fly gear I wouldbe in trouble

When all you have is a sledge hammer, everything looks like a railroad spike:

All I can say is thank you for all of the nice comments! The only hard part of this shot was waiting for that rooster to come into view & position himself nicely for the camera. BTW, roosters are not very cooperative for the camera, though, as luck would have it, he found, or at least thought he found a meal there in the doorway. This occupied him just long enough for me to shoot him.

Those are nice shots & that lens has great contrast to show off too. Mountain scenery works for me. I think it is those big beautiful curves--sought of inspire men, ya know.

Okay, I mentioned Middlebury College is a great place to visit in the fall--here is one from there in the October's 2nd week. I wasn't sure whether to shoot this tree, or call the fire trucks.

Tamron 17-50mm: F 16, 25.62mm, 1/4th, ISO 100, tri-pod, no filters

Simply Wow again!!!!
You are really making it hard for me to resist buying one.

Well, let me discourage you then. See Bimjo's post/testing above. The lens is very nice IMO, but I love to PP. I suppose you can just turn up the settings for in camera jpeg too, but I have a particular look I like to get with each shot and enjoy PPing to that end. However, there were times, when I shot jpg-in-camera, that I felt the result was just what I wanted. But I could not rely on it. From what I see, mostly all the images here are PPed to some degree, unless the lens is being introduced in a review or something.

As people have said, the way of the future is in PPing, especially with specialized software. Rather than buying a new lens, buy PS and get tutoring on how to use it, because it is one hell of a program from what I hear. Other people are using DXO to make less expensive glass rival its more expensive counterparts--with good success. You have some fantastic equipment already Jarvier!!!

BTW, I thought you were going to get the 17-35 out for me & post a few shots here.

I have not had the time. I really need to make time though
As for the lens, I shooT and do In cam PP 90% of the time, so I will pass on the 17-50

Believe me, I understand. I think passing on this lens is a wise decision when you consider all the great glass you own already.
