Thought I’d revive this thread with some shots from a recent trip to the ruined Abbey of Cluny in Bourgogne, France. The biggest church in christendom before St Peter’s in Rome, it was sold as a quarry to a local entrepreneur some time after the French revolution, and taken down little by little with dynamite. Sic transit....
Even so, what is left is imposing. My newly restored Tokina 17mm did a nice job of capturing the dimensions, I think.
Looking down from the (former) entrance, the altar was situated some 180m further down, well behind the 19th century building in the middle of the frame...

The south "big" transept (there were two sets of transverse naves) is the only part left in its former splendour...
