Why does the A club seem to be the least popular out of the clubs? I love the 50mm!

bump for the A club

I've bought 2 A lenses in 2 weeks, so joining and paying my dues.
Just yesterday I picked up a 35-105/3.5 at a local shop. I first thought it was soft, but had a second look and decided it would do until i get DA*50-135.
After testing and shooting today I like it very much. This image, shot in my yard this rainy afternoon, is from in-camera jpeg, cropped, scaled and only UM applied in PP.

ISO800 1/180 f5.6 @100mm

This lens produces the best jpeg of any lens I've got or tried in the 6 months I've had my K200D...strange. I've been tweaking the "Custom Image" settings, maybe it's a sweet spot with this glass.

I also purchased a 28/2.8 from a forum member and look forward to producing something worthy of posting here soon.

I think the A lenses are gorgeous (I'm going to post in the Fetish thread too) and so far I'm very happy using them on the K200. After reading this thread I'm lusting for some of the longer lenses, especially the 300/4, 200/2.8 and maybe a 70-210/4.

more later

Let's get this thread back up to the front. I just received my 50 mm SMC A f1.2 and decided to do some quick test.

The SMC-A 16mm f2.8 is another A 'gem'. Like others, it is pin sharp and contrasty. One of my favourites. This shot was take as a JPEG.

Leave the aperture ring in the "A" position and you can use it exactly as you'd use any other lens as far as exposure is concerned. Only difference between it and an autofocus lens is that you have to focus it yourself.

If you leave the camera AF/MF switch in the AF position, it will prevent you from taking a picture if it doesn't think it's in focus, which is occasionally useful, but given that it's looking at the center focus point only, I find it's usually too picky and won't let me take pictures i do want to take, so I move the switch to MF (or else put my thumb on the OK button, which I have programmed via the custom options to temporarily cancel AF).

Hey Marc, thanks for that. I had forgotten the AF/MF function does that with A lenses. That could be seriously annoying and even useful sometimes.

cheers

Value of A28/2?

The A28 F2 seems like the kind of lens I'd like to own but I wonder if it is really worth this much?
SMC PENTAX-A 28 MM F2 PRIME LENS - VERY FAST - eBay Digital Camera Lenses, Lenses, Photographic Accessories, Cameras. (end time 14-Mar-09 12:03:14 AEDST)
I'm certainly not prepared to pay it and I think other feel the same as it has already been re-listed without attracting a bid.
Should someone "tell 'em their dreamin'"?

I note this lens has no reviews in the lens review database!

You can certainly limp along with the Pentax-A 28mm f2.8 for a lot less.

I don't see many f2 versions for sale, though. The value of rare lenses can go much higher than their functional worth, which is already high in this case. Let's say this lens is great. Now think of the price of the FA 31mm f1.8 - a tick longer, a tick faster, AF and a nice case, but pretty close. In that light, maybe not so bad a price. (I don't know how good this lens is compared to the FA, though.)

The seller has other lenses that he has to relist a few times. Relisting isn't that expensive, especially if he gets just one bidder eventually.
