I felt pretty fortunate to get a rather uncommon spotted skunk while camera trapping in Arizona last weekend.
This was with the K1 and Irix 15, allowing the flashes to expose and freeze the animal when the camera was triggered while the shutter remained open for ten seconds to allow some natural light and stars to appear.

If I were really clever, I would have focused one shot with the infinity setting for the stars and then left the camera trap set for just the skunk to be in focus, merging the two for a final product. Nonetheless, I felt this single exposure f2.4 shot emphasizing the focal plane of the skunk while compromising any sharp focus of the stars turned out pretty well. It's a little more interesting than a completely black sky.

Hi,

I just bought the Irix 150mm macro and am trying it out. I knew it was going to be a challenging lens (my first macro), but not this frustrating. I find it extraordinarily difficult to get the subject fully in focus even when stopping down to F22! The depth of field is ridiculously narrow. I'm sure part of the problem is my technique. Live-view is also not very reliable.

So if you don't mind me asking, how did you get the flower so sharp and in focus, especially its center/disk ?

Thanks for any tips or tricks of the trade.

Best,
Oliver

I believe you're asking about this sunflower shot:

that's hand-held and at f6.3

I've never used LiveView on a hand-held Pentax, only the viewfinder... I do use the magnified viewer (OME-53), but nothing special after that...

How about working distance, how far from the sunflower were you? Thanks for mentioning the magnified viewer. I must confess I didn't know that existed. Gotta see if I can track one down here in Europe.

Tulip Art courtesy of the Irix 150mm macro

Hi,

Just recently purchased the Irix 150. The depth of field is so narrow. Getting everything tack sharp is a real challenge I am far from mastering. I got lucky with this one on my first day out with the lens. I'm pretty sure I could not duplicate it.

Good to know. Does the magnified viewer really make a difference? I have bad eyes and wear contacts. Focusing on fine details is rather difficult and exhausting after a while. So I wonder if it would be worth the investment.

Great photos. Very atmospheric, indeed.
Which lens do you use or prefer more, the 11 or the 15? I just bought the 150mm and am thinking about a wide-angle. Do you find the 11 too wide for the K1?
Grüsse aus Luxemburg,
Oliver

Love the rendering of the IRIX 150mm at 1:1. Both fore- and background blur of the white petals are smooth and free of color fringing, while the in-focus detail is crisp and just melts away from there, irrespective of how far you zoom in.
Great Pic. I also just bought the Irix 150 macro. Is this hand-held or on a tripod? And working distance from subject? I'm sure it isn't easy to get close to a dragonfly.

Handheld, and as indicated at 1:1, i.e. minimal focusing distance. At 1:1, I'm using the lens without the hood. The camera was my KP, so the picture height is about 17mm. I would estimate the fly's length to be ~12mm, similar to a honey bee.
