The obvious word is "moody," but certainly appropriate to the subject. The intense graininess makes the image look antique, as if taken in the 1800's with a pinhole camera on a paper negative. It's effective.

I had mentally written off the idea of ever using any of those ridiculously fast films...until now. That grain effect is quite amazing. You might consider cross-posting this in the "texture, pattern" thematic thread -- as a reminder that the art materials and technique can provide texture and pattern, not only the subject matter!

Thank you both! Most of the TMZ I have in my stash is expired from 2002, a long way back for that film. As a result, it's tricky to work with, trying to find the balance of taking advantage of its grain effects and what speed it has left vs. fog. For this roll, I exposed at 1600, then developed for 6400 in HC-110B to help with minimizing the fog. It's definitely true, with that combination, the grain is enhanced and I like it combined with the 18/11 Fisheye with its own unusual rendering. A great idea for the texture/pattern thread, I'll do it, thanks!

Cheers, Allan

I'll inject an observation I've posted at least once before. The particular contrast & graininess of Tri-X when developed in D-76 or HC 110, widely used by photojournalists and "candid" street photographers for decades, gave a certain gritty look that came to be expected in such photographs.

The instructions for the old Samigon 180-Degree Fish-eye lens say to set the host lens at infinity. But what happens if I set the host lens at about 2 meters? This:

Host lens: SMC Pentax-A 35-80 at 80mm and aperture wide open.
Camera: K110D at iso 400
Samigon aperture set between f/16 & 22

Love the shadow of the butte as well! Steptoe is on my short list of weekend photography destinations and one of these days, I will go there.

Did the architect who designed it have: 1) too much coffee; 2) ship curves instead of a straight edge; 3) a bad case of hiccups; 4) too much hooch while drafting the blueprints?
