Glacier Point, Yosemite

Posted elsewhere too, but I though I'd add to the fisheye madness of this thread...

DA 10-17mm Fisheye at 10mm--

Thank you. You can download the larger size on Flickr.

BTW that particular picture was taken from 46,720 ft. I have some other selected space fisheyes on the link below:

Was recently at a wedding and had my camera gear with me so I took a few shots while I was there to help out. (my sister in law was the wedding photographer) One of the lenses I had in my bad was the SMC Pentax Fish-Eye 17/4, so I let it out for a while at the venue before the wedding started. Here's a couple of the shots that I got.

Where the bride & groom were wed.

I love shooting action with my DA 10-17. Here is one of my early attempts...

Hi, I'd like to contribute, as my 10-17mm was the first lens I got for my K200D (now upgraded to K20D) after my kit lens! I love this lens, although it's currently hospitalized (being treated for catching a bug).

I give up. Were you suspended from a rope? Very cool shot...

Tee hee hee. It looks it, doesn't it?

Actually, I first created a 360 degree panorama stitching together 7 shots taken with the 10-17 (5 shots horizontally to cover 360 degrees sideways, and 1 shot at the zenith and 1 shot at the nadir.. after removing the tripod of course). Once you have a 360 degree equirectangular panorama, you can change the projection of the panorama using software to give it this kind of effect. The particular projection I used here is called "Stereographic Projection".

Eye! I mean, aye! 360 panoramas are great, as I get to do fun things like this and impress people as well as create really useful stuff like a 360 QuickTime panorama:

[Huge, 35MB .mov file, QuickTime required]

Both the above QTVR and the planet-like panorama are based on the same 360 degree panorama I shot with the 10-17.

The only gripe I have is that to do something like this, the optimal lens is a full 180+ degree circular fisheye, which as you know Pentax currently doesn't make. With a circular, you only need 2 shots theoretically (3 shots realistically) to produce 360 panos. Sigma has announced that their 4.5mm circular fisheye will be available in a K mount, but they're taking their time as usual, and 4.5mm is frankly a tad too short... I don't know why they chose that length, which produces an image circle much smaller than our APS-C sensors... perhaps they also have 4/3 in mind?

Anyway, by "dream" fisheye currently is the sSunex SuperFisheye 5.6mm, with a perfect image circle for 1.6 crop APS-C sensors (so tad small for our 1.5 crop sensors, but much bigger than the Sigma). Unfortunately, they don't have a K mount version yet, and $800 is kind of pushing it price-wise.. ;-)

Cool pano -- which stitcher did you use?

Gratuitous circular fisheye image
