Definitely the DA 10-17mm for the flexibility it provides. Used wide open, it is a great wide angle with little to show that it is a fisheye. Used closeup, it acts like a macro, with plenty of artistic distortion. It is reallyb little jewell in a nice compact package. I also have the Samyang 8, and it is also a nice lens. However, you will not get as much use from it as from the 10-17. The only reason I would consider the newer, HD version over the older version is that the tiny hood is removable, making it possible to shoot a circular fisheye image. The HD coating is great as well, but not really necessary in my kind of usage of the lens. Good luck to you what ever you decide upon.

Hi Hawk

You are in a better market for reasonable cost compared to us.
I use mine on my K100D Super and K5 ii and very happy with the results.

Totally agree. This is a light, easy to handle, and versatile fisheye that can double as a wide angle even without extensive post work, and the older DA version is becoming a real bargain now that the HD version is on the market.

Such an amazing building. Doesn't look as though it is going to last much longer though.

10-17 and 14.tc ?

Has anyone that owns both the 10-17 and the da 1.4 hd tc tried them together?

I watched this video on youtube advertising the macro abilities Olympus E-5 where Kazuo Unno is taking butterfly photos using their 8mm fisheye, what looks like a 1.4tc, and slow sync flash, and the results are amazing. Link below for anyone that wants to watch:

I wonder if there's any practical difference in the look of say the 10-17 at 10mm with the 1.4tc, vs just zooming in to 14mm the lens and no tc.

I don't think focusing any where as close (w/ longer FL in a zoom FE) for larger magnification is possible. And an extension tube would likely be too thin to make and/or the point of focus would be inside the lens. Also I am guessing it is the FE design and the TC together that permits the near-far relationships so you can see the butterfly in its environment, as otherwise the objects farther away would loom too large.

Thanks for the reply dms! I see a mfd for the 10-17 on the product page but was unsure if that was constant through the range, which it sounds like is not the case. Some day if I find myself with a 10-17 and a tc I'll give it a try.

I own both, but if I recall the manual for the DA 1.4 HD TC advises me NOT to combine them. I'll have to check, though.
