Not just for people

I have been neglecting this lens because I do not have many opportunities for portraiture, and in my family everyone insists upon having their photo taken with our magic lens, the 77 limited . . . but I got flowers! This premier lens works for flowers even though its MFD is longer than one might wish. However, it gives great bokeh, and sharpness is plenty adequate to allow cropping for framing purposes. I am resolved to use it more, maybe even on those who insist upon the magic lens.

Whoa, that final image has some serious three-dimensionality to it!

Thanks. I thought so as well. Also, I saw some 3D on the first image, especially where the red and light green colors are juxtapositioned. Red and green next to each other often create that effect for me, and I sometimes wonder if the 3D of those adjacent colors is just a personal optical artifact for me, or whether it affects others similarly.

I've noticed the red/blue 3D effect, too - like those 3D glasses in the movie theater - but in the case of your image I mentioned, it's more than that. I feel like I can reach through my monitor and touch the individual petals.

Interesting. I tried out a new (to me) lens today, the Pentax 67 100mm f 4.0 macro, highly regarded as one of the great Pentax lenses. It also produces 3D-like artifacts. I will be posting some of those photos later today, probably in Prime, Bokeh, and Large Flower clubs and maybe in the Medium Format photo section since I am using it with the 645Z camera.

Miss my 85 1.4 but I may slap the 77 onto my K-1 for a few portraits next week.

Was it stolen? I wish someone would give it back because we miss your ladies!

The AF motor stopped working and I couldn't find anyone to fix it and I don't have the patience to manually focus. After shooting a lot with both Sony and Fuji I have to say that I still prefer the results I was getting with the K-1 85 1.4 combo image quality wise. Although the AF in both the Sony and Fuji is absolutely amazing.

I still have all my Pentax gear. Didn't have the heart to try and sell it off. Plus I have yet to use a camera that rivals the K-1 for image quality.

Mind you, there's something really special about the way your Fuji 56mm renders. The Sony images never really did it for me though - the colours always looked a bit cold and the bokeh a bit flat. There's no doubt they were sharp though

There is no AF motor in the Pentax-FA 85mm f 1.4 lens. It works by screw drive from the camera, so the problem may not be too serious. Something similar happened to my Pentax-D FA 645 90mm f 2.8, and Keh fixed it up perfectly for their minimum lens repair charge, a little over $200. I recommend them.
