I'd say it gets tougher with the converter, and you end up with more pixels and at the same magnification it doesn't look worse, so if the conditions allow it (enough light, static scenes) and you're ready to invest a little more time in postprocessing, it is worth it to use it.
Thanks for the input. I was just outside grabbing some shots on the 150-450. All the exact same scene no TC, then with the Pentax 1.4, and then with the Pentax 1.7. Based on what I'm seeing there's not really much if any difference between the two TC's zoomed to 100%, with the straight lens being marginally sharper. Now those are all un-processed and the light isn't the best right now, so as you mentioned it's certainly possible that a quick run thru DxO or Topaz gives those TC's enough of a zoom advantage to make them more worthwhile than cropping the straight shots in better conditions. I'll test in sunny light on Sunday.

The old F-AF1.7 converter seems to work well with the 300 on the K-3iii. It makes me wonder why they don’t simply add HD coatings to this and re-release it. It was still available new a few short years ago, albeit production might have ended some time before that.

Here's another example of the F 1.7x AF adapter, this time coupled to a Pentax K 200mm f2.5 on a K-5iis. Who said Pentax lens / camera are too slow for birds in flight?
