Why wouldn’t you use an A 2x-S?
Is that better than the K T6-2X, which I already own?

I think it is... but I'm not sure it's worth the money over the K T6-2X if you are not going to take advantage of the "A" functionality. If we get some decently bright weather here in NJ, I'll do a little comparison among my 2x TC's - T6-2X, 2x-S, 2x-L.

Thx, I'd appreciate the comparison. Perhaps I should just try to find a nice A 400/5.6, pf members appear to really like that lens.

Only have about a million files taken with the HD DA 1.4 TC and various lenses, and another million posted with the F 1.7x AF adapter.

But we'll start with the latest and go on from there.

K-3 - Tamron 300 2.8 and HD DA 1.4 TC, overall my favourite combo.. but too heavy to carry around most of the time.

DA*60-250 and HD DA 1.4 TC

K-1 and Tamron 2x-AF MC7

K-3 and Tamron 300 2.8 with F 1.7x AF adapter.

I love my A400. I was lucky and got mine on Ebay at well below market value - it was shortly before the K-1 release, and the seller was trying to raise funds to buy it.

The A400 is sharp - not as sharp as my Tamron 400/4 or 300/2.8 Adaptalls, but sharper than the DA 55-300 at the long end. CA is always there, but I'm sure you know how to deal with it since you shoot other vintage glass. The handling is wonderful, the focus ring is well-damped and has a long throw, great for making fine adjustments to focus. It also pairs really well with the 1.4x-L.

Point Pellee National Park

Went for the first time this past weekend with my wife. Saw a few lifer birds. It was quite amazing and had a lot of fun. Took 90% of my shots with my Pentax DA*300mm with the Pentax 1.4x tc. What a beautiful combination of lenses.

Finally has a sunny day, after what seemed like weeks of rain and overcast skies. Took the opportunity to visit Magee Marsh and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge with the A* 300mm coupled to the AF 1.7x. Had the pleasure of viewing and shooting the following water show. I did not shoot in burst mode, instead taking individual shots in rapid succession. Cross post from 300mm club.

Took out my DA*300mm with the Pentax 1.4x to take some shots of the moon. Saw the plane approaching and couldn't believe my luck.

For a lark last night, I shot the moon with my SMC 300 F4 plus with the T6-2X converter. Post processing with PDCU.

The first shot is the SMC 300 F4

The second shot is with the SMC 300 F4 and T6-2X converter[COLOR="Silver"]

Cross posted in the 300 plus club, and K-3 images and the TC club and The Yardbirds thread.

My buddy Doug came in for a visit. He was camping in the park and dropped in. He was telling us about an oriole that has been hanging around his yard. I went through my long tail of woe about how when I first started shooting birds, I had some Orioles (when I lived further south. But, my lens was the Sigma 70-300 and I really sucked at handling the 300mm end of that lens. But in the 10 years we've been here, we never saw an Oriole. Well yesterday these guys turned up. Tess rushed to get the feeders out for them. Spring i slate and it's going to be up to our feeders to keep them alive for a while.

So I said to my buddy, I hope I get another chance to get an Oriole. And the very next day, voila. The universe is unfolding as it should.

Two male hummingbirds. Our female hasn't made it yet and we are worried.

So I was dithering about this morning when I look out the window an there's an Oriole on the hanger for the hummingbird feeders. My K-3 was on the kitchen table with the Tamron 300 2.8 and F 1.7x AG adapter on it, I had to shoot through the kitchen window, but what the hey.

Orioles drink from hummingbird feeders, who knew?

I managed few more shoots before he left. Hope he comes back.

Mean while, I got a few images of the regulars....

And my white crowned sparrows are finally back. All the other sparrows came long ago.

Another candid shot from afar. K-5iis + Sigma 135/2.8 Pantel couples to AF 1.7x, slight crop.

Someday if you get a chance try the A* 400 f2.8.... if you can carry it....

This image is downloaded from an sd card to my Mac with Photos 4.0, copied to the desktop with no PP then sent to PF with no image sizing....... distance is around 85 feet... like Norm has been showing for years, a quality lens with a quality TC is wonderful!
