I am curious about this 50mm lens. I already own a few older 50mm Pentax lenses, including a screw mount Takumar! Is this new lens a significant improvement over the old glass 50mm Pentax lenses?

Cheers,
Loyd

Well, technically of course yes! But for example, if you like the output character of an older 50mm tak lens and how it renders OOF areas etc.. newer 50mm imho does not have this, but what it really does is that it shows an outstanding sharpness across the whole area even at 1.4! Good transition and smooth bokeh, well controlled flares CA etc etc.... I just couldn't find anything wrong in this lens, it is just gorgeous! True star lens and my favorite one.

The DFA50 is by far the nicest lens I own. If you like to shoot wide open apertures and you like 50mm there is nothing close to it in the lineup. That being said, once you start stopping down that gap between it and the other 50s narrows. By that I don't mean the DFA50 is bad stopped down, rather that most 50s get quite good stopped down. Wide open though this is so sharp and the DC focus motor is so much more precise, consistent, and quiet. It is a pleasure to shoot with.

I don't do a lot of portraits. When I do they are mainly of my kids. Back to school is a big deal and here are the results of adding the DFA*50 to my kit this year. These are all wide open using HSS to a small octabox with a Godox TT600. My biggest concern was with AF accuracy and consistency wide open vs my older screw drive lenses, and while there are still the challenges of shooting with such narrow depth of field, this lens definitely delivered. Most of my shots were bang on. Then of course the wide open sharpness is just fantastic.
Beautiful samples. I'm serioulsy considering this lens for portraits. The new 85mm is my really desired lens, but 2000 bucks is too much for me. The 50 is more 'affordable'.
Enjoy your toy.

I see your point, I bought my DFA*50 from the forum for ~$700, in excellent condition. Worth every penny.

Starting to get a better feel for using this lens for landscapes. Compositions aren't as intuitive as with my 15mm, but with each hike I'm starting to see more opportunities where this lens can shine.

McDowell Mountains, AZ

Dutchman Trail in the Superstition Mountains

Weaver's Needle, also in the Supes

I love my copy of this lens and your first shot in your post is a stunning example of what it can do!
